Software Architect Location: Belfast, United Kingdom At Thales UK we design, develop and deliver advanced defence systems for land, sea and air. Our projects range from early warning and threat neutralisation to integrated air defence solutions and advanced aircraft avionics. If you are looking for a technical leader who can shape architectures across the full software life‑cycle, this role is for you. Responsibilities Manage and coordinate software architecture studies across lifecycle phases from Bid to Delivery in collaboration with bid/project/product teams. Approve the technical, technological, and methodological choices taken in respect of the selected software architecture. Guarantee adherence to standards, re-use and product policies. Prepare and document architecture choices, present and document their justification and trade‑offs (Design & Justification Files). Support and coach development teams throughout the development cycle. Participate in knowledge sharing such as providing state‑of‑the‑art software architecting insights, writing articles, sharing experiences during webinars, animating Dojo and peer programming reviews. Maintain a technological watch on trends and identify modelling, simulation and prototyping opportunities. Set expectations for code quality and corresponding KPIs. Set up and enforce application of coding practices. Actively contribute to the technical solution definition and improvements. Help the team focus on cross‑functional and non‑functional requirements. Educate and mentor junior developers to help them grow in their role. Align development and DevOps priorities to meet technical goals. Monitor security and commercial impact of developments on the platform. Skills & Experience Team player with a sharp intellect, a challenge‑seeking approach and a can‑do attitude. Significant experience in executing the full software engineering life‑cycle (both traditional and agile) including operational deployment knowledge with modern development practices and tools. Experience of multi‑stakeholder change management activities in a complex environment. Experience delivering software in the context of system‑level and system‑of‑systems programmes. Understanding of architectural modelling techniques and the exploitation of those techniques. Ability to influence a wide range of people to get things done in a matrix organisation, encouraging openness and innovation. Familiarity with engineering processes and solution definition. Proven modelling skills and ability to use modelling tools/methods. Experience working within an Agile environment (Scrum, SAFe, LeSS), Lean engineering and DevOps culture. Proficiency in managing performance, robustness, safety, and cybersecurity. Familiarity with design patterns and ability to define reusable referenced architecture in line with product policy. Mastery of software design and domain‑related technologies, along with knowledge of COTS/OSS licensing, intellectual property, and GDPR. Strong collaboration skills to interact with other stakeholders.
