Go back Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Practice Development Nurse The closing date is 14 December 2025 To maintain primary responsibility for ensuring the Division provides a progressive learning environment for all grades of nursing staff. The post holder will support and coordinate the development of Registered Nurses; Health Care Assistants and both pre- and post-registration nursing students by co‑ordinating educational activities and assessments of learning within the department. To be involved in the Corporate agenda participating in practice and nursing development within their Division and liaising with the Nursing Development managers as appropriate. The post holder will actively promote and contribute to inter-professional learning activities across the Division and Trust wide and be an effective role model for best practice nursing. The post holder will provide educational and clinical support for the nurses in the clinical area for 80% of their working time. To demonstrate effective communication and customer care skills with patients and their relatives/carers, thereby acting as a positive role model for nurses and other staff. Please note: Some roles may require weekend shifts at multiple sites. Main duties of the job To ensure support is provided to newly qualified registered nurses and internationally educated Nurses To provide them with a structured pathway ensuring professional standards are met To conduct teaching sessions via tailored approach classroom sessions and 1:1 at the bedside To allocate appropriate practice assessors and supervisors To provide clinical supervision required for signing off professional skills To update and maintain lists of competency for each staff To allocate staff trainings and university courses To balance clinical supervision, managerial and admin duties within structured time frames About us Our Trust is one of England's top-performing and safest trusts. Job responsibilities Clinical Practice To work in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, and Trust Policies and Procedures. To ensure that own practice demonstrates current clinical knowledge. To work clinically on a regular planned basis (80% of time or in accordance with an identified urgent service need), supporting individual nurses in developing their practice. To produce written accounts of each episode of clinical facilitation, documenting learning achieved and areas for further development. To demonstrate specialist‑nursing knowledge in clinical settings, and support the advancement of knowledge and skills using approved assessment procedures. To work effectively as part of the multi‑professional, inter‑disciplinary team, encouraging and supporting other health care professionals in the promotion and maintenance of an effective learning environment. To maintain effective working relations with colleagues at all levels and from all professions. Education and Research To facilitate the learning and continuing development of all nursing staff within the department and division, ensuring that education is responsive to service developments. To develop and co‑ordinate planned educational programmes and opportunities for all nursing staff. To advise in relation to educational opportunities and assist nurses in developing themselves in accordance with their personal development plan and/or appraisal objectives. To support nursing staff in developing clinical competency using the Trust core and clinical competency document as a framework. To monitor use and completion of these to an agreed level, in accordance with ward requirements. In conjunction with the Ward Manager/Department Lead, to assist in production and evaluation of learning contracts and objectives for nursing staff for whom there is a capability issue. To create, sustain and support an environment where practice development and change can flourish. To support appropriate mentors and preceptors in their role, ensuring that learning opportunities are effectively utilised. To promote research awareness by disseminating appropriate evidence‑based and research findings relevant to the clinical practice area. To keep the Head of Nursing, Professional Practice and Standards, informed of any new nursing research proposals, and on the progress of research studies approved by the Trust R&D and Ethics Committees. To work closely with HEI staff and the Head of Nursing, Professional Practice and Standards in contributing to the development and review of speciality‑related nursing courses, and in the evaluation of relevant courses to help inform Education Commissioning. To work collaboratively with HEIs and other Trust colleagues on Education Quality Reviews in relation to the quality of the clinical learning environment. To participate in Health Care Assistants initial training and support and ongoing education and training. To participate in inter‑professional teaching and learning including undergraduate medical education. Person Specification A Degree in Nursing or equivalent. A clinical expert either through formal qualification (diploma/degree) and/or extensive clinical experience pertinent to the area. Demonstrates evidence of developing innovative practice and of being proactive in managing change. Able to work clinically and undertake a full range of duties with regards to patient care. Able to take clinical lead, co‑ordinate the shift and take charge. Has more than 4 years experience on an acute medical ward. Has achieved Enhanced Care Competencies. ILS/ALS trained. Post‑registration teaching/mentorship qualification. Experience in teaching, mentoring and assessment.
