Associate Director of Medical Education (Simulation) Join to apply for the Associate Director of Medical Education (Simulation) role at NHS Lothian. NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society. Please note: we anticipate a high level of interest in this position and may close the vacancy early once a sufficient amount of applications are received. Therefore, please make sure you complete and submit your application at an early stage. We will fully support disabled candidates, and candidates with long-term conditions or who are neurodivergent by making reasonable adjustments to our recruitment policy and practices. To work in the United Kingdom, there is a legal requirement for an individual to demonstrate that they have the relevant permission to work in the country. This permission is, without exception, granted by the UK Visa and Immigration Service. Further information on what NHS Scotland Boards are required to do to check this as well as what your responsibilities include can be found in the further information for this vacancy. This post requires the post holder to have a PVG Scheme membership/record. If the post holder is not a current PVG member for the required regulatory group (i.e. child and/or adult) then an application will need to be made to Disclosure Scotland and deemed satisfactory before they can begin in post. Due to legislative changes from 1 April 2025, this post may require a different level of criminal records check done than is currently the case. If the post is assessed as a "regulated role", your appointment will be subject to joining the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. If there is any change to what is currently required, this will be confirmed by either the Hiring Manager or the Recruitment Team. Band 8a | Maternity Cover (12 months) Full time or LTFT (minimum 0.6 WTE) Secondment considered About The Role This is an exciting opportunity to join the NHS Lothian Medical Education Directorate as Associate Director of Medical Education (Simulation) during a period of growth and innovation. You’ll provide strategic and operational leadership across our simulation programmes, which span undergraduate and postgraduate education, faculty development, and a growing translational simulation portfolio. Our vision is to embed simulation as a tool for learning, improvement, and system change; helping teams rehearse, refine, and redesign care across our hospitals and services. As ADME (Simulation), you’ll work closely with local education leads, simulation faculty, and senior clinical teams to ensure that simulation-based education continues to make a meaningful impact on both people and patient care. Key Responsibilities Provide leadership for the design, delivery, and evaluation of simulation activity across NHS Lothian. Develop and support faculty, promoting excellence and innovation in educational practice. Contribute to the development of translational simulation, using simulation to inform service improvement and patient safety. Collaborate with regional and national partners to align NHS Lothian’s work with Scotland’s wider simulation strategy. Act as a key member of the Medical Education Directorate, contributing to its strategic and quality objectives. About You We’re looking for a skilled and enthusiastic clinician educator with experience in simulation-based education and faculty development. You’ll bring strong leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills, along with a commitment to improving systems through education. Applicants should hold a recognised healthcare professional qualification and have experience working in NHS Scotland. We welcome applications for secondment from within NHS Lothian or other Scottish Boards. The role can be offered on a less than full-time basis (minimum 0.6 WTE) by negotiation. Why Join Us? NHS Lothian’s Simulation Programme is one of the most active in Scotland, supported by a talented multidisciplinary faculty and an expanding translational simulation service. This post offers a rare opportunity to help shape how simulation contributes to education, improvement, and culture change across our system.
