Senior Ward Sister / Charge Nurse Ophthalmology Band 7 fixed term (6 months, 15 hours per week) post within the Ophthalmology Department – a busy clinic area with consulting rooms, theatres, acute emergency clinics at Kidderminster Treatment Centre, Worcestershire. Job Summary A dynamic, proactive person is required to lead the department. The role offers an exciting opportunity at a new stage of development in ophthalmology services. Responsibilities Provide strong leadership skills to manage all nursing staff and nurse practitioners, including sickness management, rostering, recruitment and appraisals. Promote best practice for patients experiencing ophthalmology issues, liaising with all multidisciplinary team members. Promote an enabling, empowering and equitable culture and ensure high quality of service provision. Actively participate in day‑to‑day clinical and operational management of the department. Ensure evidence‑based care is delivered to agreed standards and demonstrated in the achievement of clinical and operational key performance indicators. Maintain effective records management, ensuring all documentation written or electronic is managed according to Trust and NMC guidance. Ensure risk management policies and procedures are understood and operational within the department. Record, report, investigate and learn from near misses, incidents, accidents and medical device faults. Maintain a safe and clean environment for staff, patients and visitors, ensuring compliance with legislation, policies and protocols. Qualifications Registered General Nurse (RGN) with current registration. Evidence of continuing professional development. Evidence of management experience or training. Post‑registration qualification or experience. NMC recognised teaching and assessing qualification. Evidence of study at academic level 6. Experience at Band 6 within ophthalmology or a related field. Departmental management experience. Department‑based teaching. Managing clinical risk and incidents. Clinical audit activity.Risk assessment. Staff appraisals and PDR. Sickness absence / performance management. Complaints handling. Knowledge of current NHS and professional issues. Clinical credibility. Teaching and development skills. Change management and organisational skills. Leadership skills and ability to inspire and motivate others. Awareness of health and safety issues and management. Able to prioritise. Fully aware of infection control principles. Able to produce written reports and articulate concerns regarding patient care or safety. Knowledge of clinical governance principles and application. Computer literacy appropriate to the post.
