The Role The Doctoral Academy Training Lead will be responsible for the strategic oversight, coordination, and delivery of postgraduate researcher (PGR) training across the University. This includes the design and implementation of the Development Needs Analysis (DNA) process, development of CPD provision, and engagement with national developments in researcher training. The role supports both PGRs and supervisors, ensuring high-quality, relevant, and responsive training provision. What you’ll do This job description is subject to review and amendment in the light of the changing needs of the University, to provide appropriate development opportunities and/or the addition of any other reasonable duties. Key Responsibilities Training Strategy & Delivery Oversee the design and delivery of the DNA process for all incoming and continuing PGRs, including collaboration with the DProf Programme Lead for Years 2 and 3 DProf students. Provide ongoing support to PGRs and supervisors throughout the DNA process annually. Design a comprehensive CPD workshop programme and recruit appropriate staff to deliver sessions. Coordination & Collaboration Coordinate training delivery with key stakeholders including HR, Research Business & Innovation (RBI), and Student Journey teams. Lead the planning and delivery of the November cohort‑building event for new PGRs, incorporating essential training (e.g. ethics, research integrity). Quality & Engagement Oversee PGR engagement with ethics and data management requirements, including assessment of data management plans via supervisors. Act as the primary point of contact for all PGRs and supervisors regarding training‑related queries and support. External Engagement & Policy Monitor UK‑wide developments in PGR training and ensure relevant Aberystwyth University staff (e.g. Head of Doctoral Academy, AFPVC‑Rs) are appropriately briefed and informed. Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required Essential A doctoral qualification (PhD or equivalent professional doctorate). Experience in designing and delivering training or development programmes in a higher education or research context. Strong understanding of postgraduate researcher development needs and frameworks. Excellent organisational and project management skills. Proven ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external partners. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support and engage diverse stakeholders. Familiarity with research ethics, integrity, and data management principles. Ability to interpret and respond to national policy developments in researcher training. An ability to understand the bilingual nature of the University and an awareness of the procedures in place to support working bilingually. Desirable Experience working with doctoral training programmes or professional doctorates. Knowledge of the DNA process and its implementation in UK HEIs. Experience in event planning and delivery for academic audiences. Understanding of the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers and related frameworks.
