Specialist Dietitian in Acute Medicine – University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, Royal Stoke University Hospital Job Summary The University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic dietitian to work in the acute hospital based at Royal Stoke University Hospital. You will be leading the clinical service for acute medicine inpatients, working with operational leads and the Chief Dietitian at UHNM. The successful applicant will work within inpatient and outpatient caseloads, closely collaborating with a well‑established dietetic team of over 60 dietitians and dietetic assistants across a range of specialties. Key responsibilities include significant clinical experience in medicine, particularly nutrition support and enteral tube feeding. The caseload will comprise complex medical patients, including respiratory and disordered eating presentations within an acute setting. Excellent communication skills, proven leadership, and the ability to implement and sustain change are essential. Main Duties of the Job The postholder will work as a specialist practitioner dietitian, leading the clinical delivery of care for acute medicine, including specialist respiratory, cardiothoracic and complex medicine. The role supports the Chief Dietitian with Trust initiatives such as the Tissue Viability Working Group, Nutrition Steering Group, and liaison with Adult Protection teams. In partnership with operational leads, the dietitian will develop clinical pathways to ensure safe medical care across admission areas. The postholder will assess and treat their specialist caseload, maintain records, and provide advanced specialist advice within UHNM or at other provider units and organisations. The postholder will lead service evaluation, student training, and support leadership and service improvement initiatives within the Dietetics department. Job Responsibilities Work as part of the multi‑disciplinary team to lead and provide dietetic input to patients in specialty, liaising with other disciplines and agencies as required in the planning and implementation of patient care Educate patients and their relatives/carers about their condition and its significance and ensure that care information and support is available Develop and maintain links with local specialist patient support groups as appropriate Use negotiating and persuasive skills to facilitate effective service delivery within the specialty team Liaise with dietitians within the team and ensure overall prioritisation of workload, supporting other members as appropriate Maintain lines of communication within the Directorate Actively participate in ward meetings, ward rounds, case conferences as appropriate Liaise with and work as an integral member of the multi‑disciplinary team, building and maintaining effective working relationships Person Specification Essential Qualifications Registered dietitian (with relevant BSc, postgraduate diploma or masters) Evidence of personal and professional development within medicine Desirable Qualifications Leadership training Service improvement training Supplementary prescribing Essential Experience Post‑graduate experience in NHS with considerable experience in medicine Experience of working as a senior dietitian in nutrition support Trained clinical educator Demonstrated involvement in audit and evaluation of own dietetic work, including collection of outcomes and other relevant quality indicators Experience of working in different clinical settings Essential Personal Qualities Willingness to support pre‑registration practice training for student dietitians Disclosure and Barring Service Check This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check to confirm no previous criminal convictions.
