Consultant in Medical Microbiology / Infectious Diseases We are looking for Medical Microbiologists to join our existing team of 4 consultants in the department of Microbiology at Great Western Hospitals. The appointees will cover a total of 13 PAs over one or two posts, with flexibility in how this is divided. Over the next year, we aim to broaden the scope of microbiology services and want candidates trained in infectious diseases/medical microbiology who can help transform and improve care. Main duties of the job Lead infection management within the Trust/hospital/Health Board. Provide a comprehensive infection service, including clinical care, liaison with consultants, other hospital staff, medical microbiology colleagues, Genito‑Urinary Medicine, lead respiratory physicians for TB management, GPs, antibiotic pharmacists, IPC nurses, health protection consultants, and CCDCs. Regular departmental visits to ICU, Haematology/Oncology, medical/surgical admission units, and other wards; commitment to IPC. Attend committees such as IPC meetings, Medicines Management Committee, Antibiotic Working Group, Sepsis Working Group, Pathology Directorate meetings, Microbiology Management Committee. Participate in MDTs for Orthopedics, Diabetic/High‑Risk Foot, Cardiology and antibiotic pharmacy rounds. Develop sub‑specialty interests aligned with the Division’s needs and trust strategy. If UK trained, a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within six months of award of CCT by interview date; if non‑UK trained, evidence of equivalence to UK CCT. FRCPath (UK) by examination or equivalent qualification. Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Medical Microbiology. Ability to deliver the service without direct supervision. Knowledge of evidence‑based practice and infection prevention and control. Desirable: MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification. Higher qualification relevant to the role. IPC qualification. Specialist interest complementary to other consultants. Experience in antimicrobial prescribing control and OPAT. Requirements Disclosure and Barring Service check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. Certificate of Sponsorship: Skilled worker sponsorship considered. UK professional registration required.
