**Job summary**:
The Head of Private Office supports the Home Secretary and the Director (Strategy and Delivery) through their effective management of the entire Private Office Team and takes a leading role in representing the Home Secretary’s views within the Department, across Whitehall and externally.
The Head of Private Office also manages the flow of advice to the Home Secretary, ensures decisions are followed up and maintains processes and structures to ensure the Home Secretary, Ministerial Team and the Political Team have the support they need to deliver. The post holder will often engage the political and Ministerial team directly to unblock issues and provide solutions.
The Head of Private Office has a key leadership role heading up a team of over 55 including the Home Secretary’s Private Office, 6 Junior Ministerial Private Offices, and support for Special Advisers. They are expected to form strong working relationships with all Ministers across the Department, as well as the Department’s Executive Committee. The post holder will be responsible for effectively leading these teams during difficult and ambiguous circumstances, and should model exemplary leadership behaviour at all times.
This role is at Deputy Director level and will report to the Director Strategy and Delivery; working alongside the Director and with senior officials across the organisation, the postholder will play a central role in shaping and driving forward Home Office priorities: tackling illegal migration, supporting legal migration, making citizens safer and protecting our homeland security.
**Job description**:
Key responsibilities for the role include:
- Provide support and advice to the Home Secretary across the totality of Home Office business, representing and communicating views and decisions effectively both internally and
- Lead and manage the Private Office team of C.55 staff, which includes supporting 6 Junior Ministers and their offices, as well as overseeing high quality support for the political team of Special Advisors.
- Work with the political team to help define and shape Ministerial priorities, ensuring that rapid progress is made in key areas.
- Use relationships, judgement and understanding of the wider context across Whitehall including No 10 to support Ministers in their work and add value to the process and substance of decision making.
- Have the confidence and credibility to intervene and / or provide constructive challenge to senior stakeholders across the Department and Whitehall and act as a trouble
- shooter to resolve issues and bring a sense of clarity and direction to complex situations.
- Work Closely with the PPS to the Permanent Secretaries to ensure the Department is governed well and is set up to deliver for the Secretary of State and the Ministerial Team.

- profile cross-Government issues.

**Essential Criteria**
- Highly developed communication, networking, influencing and negotiation skills, with the personal presence and credibility to secure confidence at the most senior levels within the Home Office, across the Civil Service and beyond;
- Experience of working collaboratively with, and delivering through, a large and diverse group of internal and external stakeholders, showing excellent stakeholder management and leadership skills, and demonstrating significant leadership experience in a comparable position;
- Experience of leading diverse and high-functioning teams through periods of intense change, challenge and ambiguity.
- Excellent strategic judgement and policy skills, with the ability to set clear direction, translating strategic priorities into clear outcome
- focused objectives and drive forward implementation. This should include navigating and balancing a range of political, national and international pressures;
