The Scientific Computing Department (SCD) provides large-scale computing facilities, computing data services and infrastructure at both Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. Made up of numerical analysis, superSETMand, scientific computing and computation groups, the expertise and intelligence SCD provides UKRI, underpins almost every key calculation across the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and beyond.

Currently we are seeking a Project Manager, to be responsible for all aspects of project management for IRIS. IRIS helps support science across the globe by providing a cooperative community allowing scientists to not only move, store, and analyse massiveamounts of output data but also simulate possible outcomes to better design and target experiments.

This is a standalone role that reports in the PMO group leader, however, you will also work alongside a broad variety of staff within SCD and the wider UK research community.

As you would expect the workload will be varied but typically you be:
Implementing delivery plans

Selecting delivery partners and procurement for work packages

Chairing project admin meetings

Project Finance Risk management

Work package reporting Infrastructure capacity planning

Project Management Office Activities

Managing department projects as assigned through PMO

Manage the process and interaction of the department's major IT procurements

Develop and implement a new management process for SCD's major procurements

Drive the process with SCD & UKSBS to ensure procurements complete successfully

Represent SCD on the STFC procurement forum

SCD is an exciting and growing area of UKRI and should you be successful we'll commit to provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills in project and people management as well as having a direct impact on the science STFC supports.

To be successful you'll need

Essential:
Demonstrable project management expertise

Recognized project management qualification or relevant expertise

People management and leadership expertise

Experience of managing customer expectations

Preparation of reports and other documentation

Excellent organisational and numeracy skills

Desirable:
Awareness of public sector procurement

Working in a research environment

Experience of supporting the delivery of IT procurements

Experience in Progamme Management

Experience in managing technical computing projects

Awareness of science and engineering

Personal Skills and Attributes:
Essential:
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to communicate at all levels both inside and outside the organization

High levels of drive, determination, ownership and responsibility, and a creative approach to problem solving

Occasional UK and overseas travel required
