**Job summary**:

- NCA’s National Investigative Capabilities (NIC) offers all UK police investigations access to niche expertise or national functions which are otherwise not available within force. The following teams offer placement opportunities for undergraduates:
**Serious Crime Analysis Section (SCAS)**

SCAS and MPU are based together in Bristol. SCAS provides operational support to major crime investigations, the majority of which are serious sexual offences committed by strangers. The aim is to identify serial offending and persons of interest in support of investigations into some of the most serious sexual crimes committed across the country.

SCAS also offers additional services, including; searches of open source intelligence and the Police National Database (PND), assisting with charging decisions and prosecution through the production of statistical reports to support similar fact evidence and bad character, and the distribution of intelligence bulletins to our national network of contacts.

**Missing Persons Unit (MPU)**

The UK Missing Persons Unit (MPU) is the UK national and international point of contact for all missing-person and unidentified-body cases. The MPU is a small team based in Bristol that serves to provide tactical advice and investigative capabilities to police forces. A database of missing-person cases, and details of bodies or remains, is managed to enable the MPU to be a point of contact for many aspects of an investigation. The unit conducts open-source searches to assist the police, supports international enquiries, liaises with forensic-service providers for dental records, fingerprints and DNA, advises families and engages the public, to ultimately maximise chances of identification.

**Behavioural Investigative Advisers (BIAs)**

The Major Crime Investigative Support team (MCIS) provides expert assistance to Senior Investigating Officers dealing with serious crime investigations including murder, rape, series and serious sexual offences, abduction, suspicious missing persons and no body murder investigations. The MCIS Ops team is made up of a number of specialist advisers, including Behavioural Investigative Advisers (BIAs) who are commonly referred to as ‘offender profilers’. The MCIS placement is positioned within the BIA team, but will provide an opportunity to work alongside all the experts within the wider team.

The position with the BIA team was awarded Public Sector/Government Placement of the Year at University of Bath’s HSS Placements Awards 2020-21.

**Person specification**:
As Research Assistants in these busy operational teams, there is no such thing as a typical day. As part of your duties, you will be required to review and update the teams on newly published research, conduct small-scale research projects, respond to ad-hoc requests for information and help with some administrative tasks.

You may also have the opportunity to be directly involved in tactical case meetings, attend conferences with internationally renowned speakers, and work alongside the UK’s leading practitioners in a variety of specialist and complex fields.

**Qualifications**:

- The following qualifications/skills are essential to the role and proof will be required at interview:

- You must currently be enrolled on a behavioural science undergraduate degree (a degree concerned with understanding human behaviour, e.g. Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Behavioural Economics, etc). You must have successfully completed the first two years of study and must have your university’s full support for conducting a placement year.
- Applicants for the BIA Research Assistant role must be undertaking a BPS accredited Psychology degree.
- Please ensure the dates of any accreditations you are relying on, are entered on to the CV.
- Should you progress to the assessment stage of the process, you will be required to provide a copy of the original certificate.-
