Our Client is looking to hire a Senior Civil / Geotechnical Engineering Technician.
Core responsibilities:
- Contribute to the team of civil engineering / geotechnical specialists with the civil engineering and light mechanics laboratory by supporting the delivery of laboratory teaching and research programmes.
- Experienced service practitioner, planning and co-ordinating of projects and work streams with inter-related activities.
- Plan and organise own workload with involvement in project work streams.
- Provide specialist technical support to department staff and students, assisting with problem solving and query handling as required.
- Reactive and proactive service provision with others to deliver an excellent stakeholder experience.
- Build and participate in staff networks (both within the department of engineering and externally) to develop and update knowledge and skills.
- Engage with external peers and specialists to exchange knowledge and information.
- Supervise laboratory users and stakeholders conducting experiments and project work within the Civil Engineering and Light Mechanics Laboratory.
- Interpret, curate, design and present artefacts, information, data, equipment and resources.
- Implement and monitor protocols, procedures, processes and regulations.
- Monitor and report incidents.
- Carry out in-depth investigations, searches and research information and data to identify new tools and techniques to support teaching and research in the Civil Engineering and Light Mechanics Laboratory.
- Implement and monitor recognised procedures to ensure compliance and meet University values of inclusion, diversity and participation.
- Contribute to business meetings, working groups and committees to help shape service delivery and stakeholder expectations.
Role responsibilities:
- Provide high-level technical guidance and advice to academic stakeholders to support teaching, research and learning activities within the Civil, Geotechnical and Mechanical Engineering disciplines.
- Responsible for organising and maintaining technical and experimental facilities, teaching, learning and research environments with an emphasis on experimental civil / geotechnical engineering.
- Provide technical guidance and advice to solve problems and help shape the delivery of teaching, learning and research outcomes.
- Carry out a range of activities that includes the commissioning, construction and set-up of test and experimental scenarios and practical sessions relating to civil, geotechnical and mechanical engineering.
- Construct, test, repair and calibrate tools, resources, equipment, components and instrumentation.
- Set-up, demonstrate, instruct and supervise the use and operation of specialist pieces of equipment.
- Supervise key laboratory users and stakeholders where necessary.
- Deliver projects that demonstrate a high-standard of accuracy, complexity, originality and excellence.
- Provide support to team members to share technical knowledge and expertise.
- Liaise and network with specialist professionals to exchange knowledge and ideas internally and externally to the organisation.
- Be an expert user of a range of equipment related to experimental civil, geotechnical and mechanical engineering.
- Take responsibility for carrying out more specialist risk assessments and incident resolution.
- Record, monitor and collate information, analyse patterns and trends as part of teaching and research activities.
- Any other reasonable duties.
Essential Criteria:
- Significant demonstrable experience in a hands on civil / geotechnical engineering (or related discipline) laboratory role.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Proven IT skills, including use of Microsoft Office and laboratory data logging software.
- Five GCSE’s at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics (or equivalent experience).
- Post-16 qualification or equivalent experience for example:
- Level 4 qualification (such as BTEC HNC) in Civil Engineering (or related discipline) plus proven experience in an appropriate field or,
- Level 3 qualification in Civil Engineering (or related discipline) plus significant experience in an appropriate field.
- Experience of laboratory-based testing of civil / geotechnical engineering materials including drained and undrained triaxial testing, direct shear testing, and oedometer testing.
- Evidence of continuing professional development.
- Experience of working in a team.
- Ability to solve problems and resolve issues, plan solutions and make pragmatic decisions.
- Demonstrable ability to provide advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues.
- Experience of implementing policy and procedures, including Health and Safety Legislation.
- Extensive knowledge and experience of monitoring activities of self and others to ensure health and safety regulations are adhered to.
- Demonstrable ability to deliver high precision technical skills and the operation of standard and complex scientific, technical and creative equipment.
