Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom Arup Full time

This job posting isn't available in all website languages.

Tackling climate change is arguably the most difficult challenge humanity has faced and to overcome it will require experts from all disciplines and backgrounds to come together and collaborate. Arup has made sustainability and the urgent need to transform the energy system to low carbon its most important priority in response to this challenge, through the launch of our climate services plan. We are already recognised as leading consultants in this field and are working for both public and private sector clients on some of the most important advisory and engineering projects in the UK today. This includes advice to central and local governments on decarbonisation strategies, managing innovation programmes for low carbon technologies, delivering design solutions for tomorrow's low carbon energy system and providing sustainable investment advice. Over the next three years we will substantially grow our energy business to meet this challenge and so are looking to recruit across a wide range of skills and grades in all parts of the UK. Our current portfolio of work is grouped into six key client-facing themes: Offshore Wind, City Decarbonisation, Utility Networks, Nuclear, Hydrogen and Energy+.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Associate Director to join our established and growing Advisory Team in Birmingham. With a focus on Energy Networks, Major Infrastructure Development and integrated project management, you will play a key role in leading and growing the Energy Advisory business and supporting clients in the development and delivery of projects and initiatives that will drive towards a net zero future. Our clients include national utility organisations such as National Grid as well as private developers and investors looking to contribute to decarbonisation of the sector. We are particularly focused on the development phases of projects and programmes which include co-ordination and management of multi-disciplinary activities across engineering, design, planning, consenting, environmental assessment and stakeholder management.

The role

As a senior leader within the Arup organisation, the role of an Associate Director in the Energy Advisory business is to drive, challenge and successfully deliver complex energy projects and provide advice to clients using best practice Programme and Project Management knowledge and advisory skills. Your typical activities and responsibilities will include:

  1. Building, managing and maintaining positive client relationships; generating new work and delivering against business plans.
  2. Being the accountable Project Director on complex or high-profile major infrastructure projects and programmes. Leading teams of multi-disciplinary specialist engineers, planners and technical experts to provide a joined up 'One Arup' offering to support positive outcomes for clients.
  3. Staff recruitment and development. Contributing, shaping and influencing the direction and activities carried out by teams outside your direct line of command.
  4. Ensuring your team delivers commissions to a high standard of quality and client satisfaction.
  5. Identifying and mitigating reputational and commercial risks to Arup.
  6. Leading the development of new service offerings.

Is this role right for you?

This position offers scope for personal development, and we encourage independent thinking, focusing on developing existing skills and experience, and the sharing of these experiences with other team members.

You will be able to demonstrate your understanding, skill, and experience in the following areas:

  1. Significant background of working in the Energy industry with preference for knowledge of Networks businesses and leadership in developing Energy infrastructure projects.
  2. Knowledge of UK planning (DCO and TCPA) process and requirements, as well as application across major projects.
  3. Strong commercial insight for assessing key value drivers for projects.
  4. Building strong and trusted relationships at all levels within an organisation and have exceptional stakeholder management skills (both internally and externally).
  5. Delivering positive results against a business plan.
  6. Management of complex high-risk projects and programmes, including advice related to the establishment of project delivery arrangements and governance.
  7. Ability to get things done through others; leading multi-disciplinary project teams of 10 or more and being responsible for achieving plans and targets set by you for the team.
  8. Assessing real world project scenarios in line with your experience across several key PM dimensions e.g., Governance, Control, Risk, Stakeholders, Finance and Resources.
  9. Drawing on ideas from diverse experiences and project managing the development or delivery of new services.
  10. Integration of a range of digital tools in delivery of projects and services.
  11. Making use of a strong external network of industry contacts to build project or company visibility and credibility. Shaping and influencing the views and opinions of others whilst maintaining positive engagement and team, stakeholder and client relationships.

Technical Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum of a good first degree in a relevant subject.
  • Chartered professional in a relevant profession.
  • In depth knowledge of the energy sector generally and network and energy infrastructure development specifically.
