The Ipswich Research Centre (IRC) develops advanced, leading-edge optoelectronic devices for the next generation of optical communications networks. Building a heritage of over 40 years in the compound semiconductor industry, IRC has become one of the most advanced compound semiconductor research centres in Europe. IRC has a proven track record of innovation, having designed and developed several world-leading high-performance optoelectronic components for Huawei's product lines.
Your Role
We are on the lookout for an R&D Director—a visionary ready to join and uplift our top-tier R&D team. This role isn't just about leadership; it's about inspiring a dedicated team eager to solve the intricate puzzles our internal clients present. As the R&D Director, you'll be the maestro, orchestrating research programs that not only align with our mission but propel us into the future. You'll craft strategies, tap into funding opportunities, and lead a team of brilliant minds.
Collaboration is key. You'll work hand in hand with our executive and senior management across Ipswich, Cambridge, and China, ensuring our research beats in harmony with our company's heart and goals. You're not just an expert in your field, but a strategist, a communicator, and an organizer, adept at steering projects, managing budgets, and building enduring relationships with customers.

You'll be the force behind refining our existing products to mirror the latest market trends and the architect of new creations that meet the intricate needs of our target markets. - Craft and execute the organization's R&D strategy, collaborating with headquarters to steer, delineate, and oversee the realization of IRC's forthcoming technology roadmap and the broader 5-year strategic outline.
- Guide, nurture, and inspire an expanding team of diverse, highly skilled R&D engineers and specialists, committed to creating industry-leading optoelectronic devices.
- Establish, cultivate, and sustain external relationships and alliances with essential stakeholders, including executives, marketing teams, investors, and academic collaborators involved in research projects.
- Stay informed about the latest advancements and breakthroughs in III-V materials and innovations within the optoelectronics field to pinpoint trends and opportunities for new research initiatives.
- Serve as the company's ambassador at major international gatherings, including high-profile conferences and workshops, both within Huawei and in the broader industry community.
- Identify new business prospects and secure support from key stakeholders, both within and outside the organization.
- Offer technical guidance and exert influence across various projects, ensuring the selection of the most effective design and development strategies.
- Partner with project managers, design leads, process architects, and process engineers to devise and construct viable project plans that meet customer expectations.
We Seek
- Requires at least a Master's degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Electronic Engineering).
- Considerable leadership expertise within a research setting, demonstrated by a history of securing and executing successful optoelectronic research initiatives.
- A solid understanding of III-V semiconductor device physics, characterization, and process.
- Robust people management capabilities, adept at offering clear guidance and leadership, such as steering a project team to collaborate effectively with a group of international experts across various business sectors.
- Demonstrated capacity to engage with both internal and external stakeholders, complemented by solid management, negotiation, and advocacy abilities.
- Profound analytical abilities, characterized by clear, systematic thinking, showcasing robust judgment and problem-solving skills.
- Readiness and capability to undertake global travel.
