Role Overview: The Head of Finance will lead in the development and implementation of the Cathedral's financial strategy and objectives, providing expert financial guidance and support to Chapter, COO and senior colleagues, in order to develop strategy to deliver Chapter's vision. Managing a small finance team of two, the Head of Finance is responsible for overseeing the financial management and operations of the Cathedral, as well as taking responsibility for finance systems. The role ensures the financial health and sustainability of the Cathedral by managing budgets, financial analysis and planning, reporting, and compliance. The Head of Finance will advise the COO, Chair of the Finance Committee and Chapter, and will attend all Chapter and Finance Committee meetings. The Head of Finance is a member of the Cathedral's Senior Management Team, and will deputise for the Chief Operating Officer as required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Overall responsibility for the finance function of the Cathedral, taking a 'hands-on' approach to all areas of finance.
  • Financial Strategy: Develop and implement financial strategies to support the Minster's mission and objectives; provide strategic business planning support to the wider organisation; work with the Finance Committee and Chapter to ensure that investments are delivering the best possible return.
  • Financial Planning and Budgeting: Develop and maintain the Minster's annual budget, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and financial targets.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare regular financial reports for the COO, the Dean, Chapter, the Finance Committee, and other stakeholders; lead the annual audit and prepare the statutory year-end reporting.
  • Financial Control: Ensure effective financial controls are in place; monitor and control expenditures including a rigorous pursuit of best value, ensuring compliance with budgetary constraints and financial policies; proactively assess the impact on finances to identify and mitigate any significant risks.
  • Financial Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards, financial policies, regulations and all relevant legal frameworks.
  • Financial Analysis: Conduct financial analysis to identify trends, variances, and support opportunities for improvement.
  • Financial Systems: Optimising and developing finance and payroll systems to ensure robust control, organisational efficiency and evolution.
  • Stakeholder Management: Collaborate with Chapter, Senior Management Team, the Finance Committee, and other stakeholders to provide financial insights and recommendations; attend all Chapter and Finance Committee Meetings.
  • Team Leadership: Lead and manage the small finance team, providing guidance, support, and professional development.
  • Governance: Work with the Chair of the Finance Committee, the Dean, and the COO to ensure that management information and options appraisals are presented in a transparent way enabling strategic decisions to be taken by Chapter; attend Audit and Risk Committee meetings; review any governance arrangements related to finance.
  • Tax: Manage the various HMRC requirements including: VAT, PAYE, Gift Aid and NI.

Person Specification:

  • Qualified Accountant: (ACA/ACCA/CIMA) preferred. Qualified by experience candidates will be considered.
  • Experience: Preferably 5 years senior finance experience at this level gained within a small to medium size organisation, either commercial or not for profit.
  • Skills: Strong financial analysis, budgeting, and reporting skills; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; strong manager; ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders; excellent finance systems skills including Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with FRS 102 is preferred, along with an understanding of current financial challenges and opportunities.
  • Empathy: for the Cathedral's Christian faith.

Package:

  • Pension: 8.5% of salary paid into a nominated Personal Pension Plan.
  • Holidays: 28 days + Bank Holidays.
