About the role

This role will sit within the Operational Sustainability Excellence team whose main purpose is to ensure BSI is exemplar in its own operations, demonstrating integrity and belief in our purpose. The team achieves this through the use of standards and BSI's own commercial solutions as much as possible.

The Head of Group Sustainable Operations will support BSI to deliver its sustainability strategy. The role will be leading the delivery of BSI's sustainability strategy and plans, particularly for net zero, inspiring, motivating and working closely with colleagues across BSI's operations to implement sustainability improvements across the environmental sustainability spectrum, and measure the impact of interventions.

Responsibilities:
  • Implement BSI's sustainability strategy and plans and feedback to ensure continuous improvement and updates to the plan as progress moves forward.
  • Lead the management of BSI's path towards net zero through carbon (energy, travel and supply chain) management and internal carbon budgets, collaborating with each Function and Division globally on performance against yearly target.
  • Lead the design and implementation of BSI's medium and long-term transition plan towards net zero.
  • Lead the implementation of a circular economy improvement plan throughout BSI operations globally (catering, facilities and waste management, IT, marketing, etc.).
  • Lead the implementation of a biodiversity improvement plan across BSI locations globally.
  • Lead the formulation and implementation of climate adaptation plans.
  • Lead, engage, develop and empower the team to achieve individual and team goals that support the business strategy (line managing the Group Sustainable Operations Manager and the Group Sustainability Analyst).
  • Work with internal stakeholders to further integrate sustainability into BSI's operations and processes. Key stakeholders include procurement, compliance, facilities, IT, marketing and finance.
  • Suggest and implement relevant standards and BSI's commercial solutions to improve performance as appropriate, and maintain ongoing compliance to standards (e.g. ISO14064-1, Net zero pathway, ISO14068-1, etc.).
  • Ensure data and case studies are collated from across BSI's operations globally. This includes driving and supporting data improvement projects in our global expenses and reporting systems and working closely with the engagement branch of the OSE team on engaging communications.
  • Maintain carbon neutral status through credible offsets in line with our principles.
  • Support external ESG reporting (e.g. TCFD, CSRD).
  • Bring and highlight opportunities for continuous improvement, innovative solutions and industry leading practice.
  • Support the Director of Group Sustainability and undertake related ad hoc tasks and projects as required.
To be successful in the role, you will have:
  • Extensive expertise in Greenhouse Gas, Net Zero and Carbon legislation, requirements, innovation and ideas.
  • Heavily data driven, with proven experience supporting organisations with data improvements around Greenhouse Gas, Net Zero and Carbon.
  • Demonstrable experience designing and delivering transition plans and ensuring businesses deliver against Net Zero transition goals.
  • Experience operating in a global organisation.
  • Experience implementing ISO net-zero standards.
  • Experience developing and implementing sustainability strategies and plans.
  • Great experience managing a team in a corporate environment.
It would be highly beneficial, but not essential if you had:
  • Experience in a service industry.
  • Masters degree in sustainability, environment or environmental engineering type topic.
  • Previous experience with a greenhouse gas management tool/system or software.
  • Multi-lingual (Spanish and/or Chinese).
  • Previous experience supporting ESG Reporting.
  • Holds or has held membership with IEMA.
