Group Operations Director at Fairley Gunn Group

Company:

NDT Electronic Services Ltd (NDTE) is the UK’s leading specialist in sales, service, repair, instrumentation calibration, and planned maintenance of industrial radiography Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) equipment and systems. NDTE is part of the Radiography Division of the Fairley Funn Group (FGG). FGG has the collective vision to Champion & Support British Manufacturing. Value, loyalty and efficiency are at the heart of what we do. We firmly believe in the best solutions for our customers and clients – this is what we pride ourselves on and live our vision by.

The Radiography Division operates in the radiography inspection sectors including industrial NDT, NDE, security, food, processing/FMCG, research, academia and nuclear, and is currently made up of three trading businesses (across three sites): NDT Electronic Services Ltd (NDTE), Gilligan Engineering Services Ltd (GES) and Metrix NDT Ltd (MET).

NDTE has been trading for more than 35 years and built amazing relationships with customers and suppliers. We always take care of employees and promote professional development.

Due to growth and forward planning, we are looking for an adept Principal Electronic Engineer who can diagnose and repair electrical, electronic and instrumentation equipment and systems using first principles, can design, spec, build and certify bespoke equipment, products and interfaces and likes the balance of hands-on and desktop work. You will complement the organisation by working both independently and in a team, but most importantly, can get on with it.

We’re looking for an experienced, practical, hands-on Principal Electronic Engineer who can apply their great electrical/electronic engineering knowledge to practical solutions, enjoying diagnosing and fault finding down to component level (PCBs), then using skills and experience to repair or recommend the next steps. As a senior member of the technical team, you will become the go-to for technical queries and will involve a level of mentoring and coaching to other team members. Some travel and site visits expected, between sister sites and customers/suppliers. You will be able to work to tight deadlines and have good time management awareness along with a suitable experience. Provided your attitude and attention to detail meets our standard, industry experience of working with radiography equipment is not essential. Ongoing training, certification and support is assured. Full UK driving licence and clear DBS required.

Part of the role will require working from our sister company sites.

Division Vision:

To be the go-to trusted partner for radiography inspection solutions, systems and sources.

Division Mission:

To help customers stay in production, safe and compliant.

Role:

This role would ideally suit a highly skilled and experienced electronic or instrumentation engineer whose engineering capabilities span other disciplines such as electrical and mechanical – and are able to apply sound first principles to engineering challenges.

  1. Workshop operates on a 37.5hr week (early finish Friday)
  2. Flexi- and lieu-time where permitted
  3. Working from sister company sites around the UK as required – based at NDTE
  4. Occasional site visits (20%), workshop based (80%), potential for overnights away

Person:

  1. Strong safety awareness and culture, no short-cuts or side-stepping safety measures
  2. Logical and methodical thinker and worker who can prioritise
  3. Able to apply technical knowledge or conduct suitable research to solve problems
  4. Takes responsibility for own learning and development
  5. Takes accountability for own actions
  6. Not afraid of hard work or getting dirty
  7. Can use own initiative and manage own time – no idle hands
  8. Role model and leader for junior team members
  9. Can work autonomously and as part of a team
  10. Strong communication skills at all levels
  11. Person of integrity and does the right thing when no one is watching
  12. Able to maintain composure under pressure and meet deadlines
  13. Confident and able to speak up when things are not right, or mistakes made

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Providing technical expertise and advising internally and externally
  2. Diagnostic and repair of electrical and electronic equipment and electromechanical systems, including down to PCB component level
  3. Diagnostic and repair of instrumentation
  4. Support Technical Director with designing electrical/electronic systems for upgrades, overcoming component obsolescence and integrating with third party equipment and systems
  5. Responsible for revision control and roll-out of revisions
  6. Support Technical Director with development and implementation of new products, services, equipment and systems, including revision and upgrade of existing equipment and systems
  7. Completion of risk assessments, reports, documentation, and certificates
  8. Support Technical Director with completion of designers documentation, user requirement specs, manuals, procedures and technical documentation
  9. Have the knowledge, understanding and competency to identify potential regulation breaches and feedback to the office (training provided)
  10. Technical input to sales to ensure the correct solution is offered/quoted
  11. Calibration of instrumentation and electronic equipment
  12. Safe, correct, and efficient preventive and routine maintenance of equipment and machinery
