The opportunity:

We are looking for a talented Finance Business Partner to work in our London office. The role of Finance at Markel is varied and they are responsible for recording financial transactions, providing financial information to the Markel Corporation, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory reporting obligations, planning and forecasting future performance and providing accurate financial performance information to key decision makers. Markel Finance is structured into three main operational areas; Financial & Regulatory Reporting, Reinsurance & Credit Control & FP&A and Business Partnering.

This role will be an important part of the wider team within Finance and will be expected to quickly establish strong working relationships with colleagues and external partners.

What you'll be doing:

  1. Provide finance function support and financial analysis to the National Markets division.
  2. Financial analysis to enable a better understanding of the reported US GAAP results for both underwriting and services, primarily by providing insight into variances to plan.
  3. Produce regular KPIs and associated analysis in an accurate and timely fashion.
  4. Assist Head of Finance with commentary for Board reporting and planning analysis.
  5. Support the business in their planning process, including written strategic business plans and GAAP planning.
  6. Assist each of the National Markets regions with relevant support and data ahead of each reporting and planning cycle.
  7. Ad-hoc activities as required.

Our must haves:

  1. Have a strong analytical mind-set and excellent excel skills. Skills using other data analytic tools would be very useful.
  2. Demonstrate experience of working in the non-life insurance industry.
  3. Be able to demonstrate an understanding of technical insurance accounting skills, combined with the ability to work closely with a very broad range of partners.
  4. Demonstrate a desire to learn and progress in the organisation.
  5. Be pro-active in nature with the ability to engage with many team members of varying levels.
  6. Be reliable and take self-responsibility to respond in a timely fashion to business requests.
  7. Work closely with other parts of Finance, including helping others (and vis versa), as and when necessary.
