The Opportunity

Avantor is looking for a dedicated and experienced Senior Laboratory Manager to join our team in Cambridge, UK. In this role, you will be responsible for managing multidisciplinary laboratory spaces (16+), collaborating with internal teams and external contractors to drive innovation, sustainability, and operational efficiency. This position will be based in a brand-new facility at The Discovery Centre on the Bio-Medical Campus in Cambridge.

This role will be a full-time permanent position. Alongside an attractive salary, we offer multiple benefits such as a bonus, pension scheme, private medical and dental care, and an additional day off for your birthday.

Working hours: Monday to Friday, core hours.

The Team

You'll be part of a highly-experienced team of Senior Laboratory Managers and Laboratory Service Managers, working in a dynamic environment, supporting scientists across various therapeutic areas and enabling impactful scientific delivery. You'll belong to our business department Lab and Production Services, which supports large pharmaceutical companies and laboratories worldwide in Research and Development within the Life Sciences industry.

What We're Looking For

  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline (preferably Chemistry/Biochemistry) or equivalent experience in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience:
    • Proven experience in managing laboratory operations, including overseeing large teams and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.
    • Strong project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple responsibilities and drive process improvements in a dynamic environment.
    • Expertise in health and safety compliance, including COSHH, risk assessments, SHE procedures, and proactive safety management.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence teams, customers, and vendors at all levels.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, proficient in data analysis and reporting (especially with Microsoft Excel).
    • Experience with change control processes, Lean Sigma methodologies, and implementing technological innovations to enhance lab operations.
    How You'll Thrive And Create An Impact
    • Oversee day-to-day laboratory operations and support a team of 20+ Lab Managers to ensure smooth and efficient lab operations.
    • Coordinate with facilities management suppliers to plan preventative maintenance schedules with minimal disruption to daily work.
    • Lead health and safety compliance efforts, including COSHH, risk assessments, and SHE inspections, ensuring a safe lab environment.
    • Support project initiatives, identify process improvements, drive change, and implement new technologies to enhance lab efficiency.
    • Foster strong relationships with internal research teams, external contractors, vendors, and regulatory bodies to ensure effective collaboration.
    • Champion the change control process and lead cross-functional meetings covering key areas like safety, facilities, and asset management.
