They offer a full turnkey project management service to satisfy the customers' requirements, and their full range of services enables a smooth project lifecycle - from concept, through to developing your design, to manufacture, and then through to installation, commissioning, and providing the full service-life assurance.

Their design team is now looking for a senior member, someone with at least 10 years in mechanical design from a manufacturing, workshop, fabrication setting.

JOB PURPOSE

The purpose of the Senior Design Engineer role is to control the design delivery of internal and external projects, ensuring adherence to specification/ requirements, compliance with standards/ legislation, and full consideration for the product lifecycle. This will include reporting design team performance against budget and programme to the Engineering Supervisor, Engineering Manager, and respective Project Manager. The role is responsible for generating compliant & accurate design output into purchasing, production, and operations.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Manage the production of designs that comply with product assurance limitations, considering all stages of the product lifecycle (including material limitations, manufacturability, installability, operability, etc).
  2. Eliminate H&S risks from designs in accordance with CDM regulations.
  3. Ultimate responsibility for product Designer's Risk Assessments, clearly identifying mitigation measures incorporated; good knowledge of risks and mitigations.
  4. Checking & Approval responsibilities in accordance with company process (3D Models & 2D Drawings).
  5. Ensure all design output aligns with the Engineering Handbook, BS 8888, and is 100% accurate.
  6. Work closely with analysis engineers to ensure designs/models/drawings developed accurately reflect the theoretical analysis, advising on design issues, and logging changes in accordance with company procedure.
  7. Understand the build sequence in design of all output, prior to release into production engineering.
  8. Ensure Design and/or Manufacturability reviews are completed and documented, and communicate design intent to the wider project team.
  9. Support continuous improvement initiatives to increase departmental design capabilities and improve efficiency.
  10. Confirm appropriate door template with Reportees prior to commencing work, where appropriate.
  11. Maximise change capture within the department, ensuring all change is captured on projects.
  12. Provide support to the project teams, liaising with customers as required.
  13. Complete adherence to Booth's ISO 9001 procedures for the engineering department.
  14. Attend on-site/off-site customer meetings & shop floor as required.
  15. Responsible for achieving schedule adherence for all actions assigned to individual projects.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  1. Minimum HND in Engineering, plus 10 years' experience of industrial sheet/steel fabrications OR;
  2. Minimum Bachelor's degree (BEng Hons) in Engineering (preferably Mechanical Engineering) plus 6 years' experience of industrial sheet/steel fabrications.
  3. Ability to use Autodesk 3D Inventor, AutoCAD, and Autodesk Vault unaided.
  4. Understanding of steel manufacturing techniques and limitations (incl. press brake).
  5. Understanding of load paths, failure modes, and operating limits of steel structures/components.
  6. A focus on quality adherence and timely output.
  7. Ability to write reports and specifications.
  8. Flexibility to work overtime to achieve project plan as required.
  9. Understanding of tolerance stacking, and the practical application of tolerances.
  10. Awareness of door performance testing standards and guides.
  11. Knowledge of welding types, strengths, and limitations.
  12. Strong communicator with internal and external customers alike, with good presentation skills.

Desirable:

  1. Working knowledge of BIM.
  2. Experience managing engineers on projects of value > £500k.
  3. Understanding of drive and control systems operating principles.
  4. Hold valid SC clearance, or hold the ability to obtain it.
