Job overview

The Royal Marsden has made significant investment in developing new ways of working for senior cancer nurses as Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANP) in Medical Day Units (MDU), Outpatients and Clinical Assessment Units. The Royal Marsden delivers services across several sites, including its main centers in Chelsea and Sutton, a Medical Day Unit located at Kingston Hospital, and a dedicated private diagnostics and treatment facility at Cavendish Square. The ANP position will form part of the established team at the Sutton site. With support from both nursing and medical mentors, the ANP will be gradually incorporated into existing clinics, working as an autonomous practitioner to undertake an extended scope of practice.

Main duties of the job

Clinical leadership to the nursing teams, maintaining credibility through practice and provide a high quality and safe patient service, which exceeds patient expectations. Routine management of patients with gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. Using advanced clinical decision making and assessment skills, prompt treatment plans or referrals will be initiated to effectively manage acute and chronic cancer-related complications and/or toxicities from systemic anti-cancer treatments (SACT), supportive therapies and/or radiotherapy. Support the MDU with queries and assess and appropriately manage unwell and deteriorating patients to stabilise and transfer patients appropriately. Booking of routine and emergency investigations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The ANP will undertake routine advanced physical assessment of GI patients including assessing these patients prior to each treatment using thorough history taking, clinical examination, arranging relevant investigations (e.g., blood tests, imaging), prescribing SACT and other supportive medications, and arranging appropriate follow up when necessary. The ANP will manage patients living with and beyond their cancer. Working with the GI CNS team and the Lead GI Nurse to provide support and advice to nursing, medical and allied health professionals. To provide support and advice to patients and their carers relating to their disease, their cancer treatments chemotherapy, and any procedures. To obtain informed consent from patients prior to starting their first anticancer systemic treatment and ongoing cycles of SACT.

Significant post registration nursing experience in oncology or specialty to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job. Recognised Advanced Nurse Practitioner skills including advanced assessment skills, selecting, and recommending appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic management. Excellent understanding and experience in the recognition and management of ongoing oncological conditions. Current experience in managing the deteriorating oncology patient, including the safe transfer of patients Experience in a large complex organisation and/or NHS Knowledge of Oncology Services and related DH guidelines. Experience of change initiatives within and operational and clinical team Experience of managing projects involving clinicians and track record of successful engagement with clinical leaders

Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
