Mechanically Biased Shift Engineer – BlackburnSalary- £53,000+ Shift Pattern: 4 on / 4 off Days and nights Pension: 10% Company Contribution Location: BlackburnWe are seeking a proactive, mechanically skilled and safety-conscious Shift Engineer to join our engineering & maintenance team. This role is ideal for someone with strong mechanical capability, methodical problem-solving ability, and experience within an industrial or production environment. About YouYou’ll bring a strong mechanical background supported by recognised qualifications and at least three years of hands-on experience in maintenance, repair, or industrial engineering settings. You’ll be someone who understands how machinery behaves and can diagnose, repair and improve plant performance with confidence and care.You will also: Have a strong understanding of mechanical systems, bearings, drives, gearboxes and moving plant.Have a safety-first mindset, backed by practical knowledge of engineering controls and site precautions.Work well individually and collaboratively.Take pride in delivering work to a high standard. Training, Competency & Technical ExposureA strong base of mechanical learning and site-based understanding across areas such as: Mechanical qualifications or apprenticeship training (e.g., City & Guilds / NVQ Level 3 / ONC / HND equivalents)Experience with production control systems and fundamental PLC operationFamiliarity with PNP & NPN sensor principlesExposure to lifting gear, slinging and associated safe practiceUnderstanding of HAV guidelines, noise, tooling vibration and occupational impactSolid manual handling awarenessGas-related plant safety knowledgeUnderstanding of confined-space requirementsInduction and site-familiarisation process completionCOSHH awareness, including correct handling, storage and interpretationLock-off / isolation methodology for mechanical interventionKnowledge of silica exposure risksWorking at height, including safe use of MEWPs, lifts and harnessesEnvironmental awareness, including spill management and reporting (Training can be refreshed internally for the right candidate.) Key Responsibilities: Perform mechanical maintenance, repairs and servicing of plant and equipment.Following any installation or maintenance task, ensure: safety guards are reinstatedall safety systems are operationaldebris is removed before the equipment is restarted Support kiln operations — shutdown, light-up and routine service activities.Work collaboratively with Maintenance Electricians when required.Keep plant maintenance logs, operational data and PPM documentation up to date.Develop a working familiarity with plant machinery sequencing and operation.Use tools and equipment safely with correct PPE and immediately withdraw defective tools from service.Report hazards, failures or irregularities to the Maintenance Manager.Maintain workplace housekeeping and safe working conditions.Carry out high-standard PPM activity with clear written records.Be willing to work reasonable overtime and support holiday cover.Participate in training when requested — during shift or on designated rest days.
