Devon County Council is seeking a Senior Lawyer to join our Legal Services team, providing strategic advice and leadership on complex civil litigation matters.About the Role The Senior Lawyer Job Description contains generic information, not all of which will be applicable to this role. As a Senior Lawyer, you will provide high-level legal advice and assistance to the Council and its directorates, with a strong emphasis on civil litigation. You will also supervise junior lawyers and contribute to strategic decision-making. Your responsibilities will include: Draft, negotiate, and settle pleadings, applications, orders, and other relevant documents for litigation and planning matters. Provide legal advice to senior officers and members on civil litigation, planning law, and related areas. Conduct and oversee litigation including contested hearings, mediations, and instructing counsel or specialist advocates. Advise on strategic planning issues and represent the Council at panels and project boards. Supervise and mentor junior lawyers, ensuring quality and compliance. Review and approve Cabinet Reports and provide input on policy development. Take part in the Legal Services’ Out of Hours service for urgent matters.About You Qualified solicitors, barristers with rights to conduct litigation, or hold a CILEX professional qualification with litigation rights (or equivalent), and are registered with the relevant professional body. Extensive experience in civil litigation , including advocacy. Strong leadership and supervisory skills. Excellent communication and influencing skills, both written and verbal.
