Job Title: SEN ESOL Tutor
Location: Oxfordshire
Position Type: Temporary
Start Date: ASAP
Salary: £30-£35 Per Hour
About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced and compassionate SEN ESOL Tutor to support learners with Special Educational Needs (SEN) who are learning English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Based in Oxfordshire, this role involves delivering tailored ESOL lessons to a diverse group of students, many of whom may have additional learning needs, including language, cognitive, or social-emotional challenges.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced tutor or teacher with expertise in both SEN and ESOL. You will be responsible for designing and delivering lessons that cater to the individual needs of each student, enabling them to improve their English language skills while also providing additional support for their learning difficulties.
This is a rewarding opportunity to make a significant impact on students’ lives by supporting their language development and helping them integrate into wider educational, social, and community environments.
Key Responsibilities:
* SEN and ESOL Teaching: Deliver high-quality, differentiated ESOL lessons that are tailored to students with Special Educational Needs (SEN). This includes adapting lesson plans to meet the varied learning styles and abilities of each student.
* Individualized Learning Plans: Develop and implement personalised learning plans (ILPs) that address both language acquisition and the specific learning needs of the students.
* Functional English Skills: Focus on teaching practical English skills that are essential for day-to-day life, such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening, while taking into account the individual barriers each student may face.
* Inclusive Classroom Environment: Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement and fosters confidence, communication, and social integration.
* Assessment and Monitoring: Assess student progress through formative and summative assessments, tracking development in both ESOL and SEN goals. Provide feedback to students, parents, and other professionals involved in the student's education.
* Differentiation: Use a range of teaching strategies and resources to ensure that lessons are accessible to all students, including those with visual, auditory, or physical impairments, as well as those with cognitive or emotional needs.
* Collaboration with Other Professionals: Work closely with SENCOs, teaching assistants, parents, and external agencies to ensure that the needs of each student are met comprehensively. Participate in multi-disciplinary meetings when necessary.
* Behaviour and Emotional Support: Implement positive behaviour strategies and provide emotional support to students who may face challenges related to language barriers, cultural integration, or other social-emotional needs.
* Record Keeping and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of student progress, interventions, and any incidents or issues that require attention, ensuring compliance with safeguarding and educational standards.
* Support Transition: Provide support for students transitioning into mainstream education or further community integration, ensuring they have the skills and confidence to succeed.
Essential Qualifications & Experience:
* Teaching Qualification: A relevant teaching qualification such as QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills) or PGCE with a focus on ESOL or SEN, or a CELTA/Trinity TESOL qualification (or equivalent).
* Experience with SEN: At least 1-2 years of experience working with students with Special Educational Needs in a classroom or 1:1 setting.
* ESOL Experience: Proven experience teaching ESOL students, ideally with a focus on beginners or students with limited prior English language skills.
* Understanding of SEN: A strong understanding of different SEN conditions (e.g., autism, ADHD, dyslexia, speech and language difficulties) and how to adapt teaching methods to support students with these needs.
* Differentiation: Ability to adapt teaching materials and methods to accommodate different learning needs and styles.
* Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex language concepts in simple and accessible terms.
* Cultural Sensitivity: A strong understanding of cultural differences and the ability to work with learners from diverse backgrounds in a sensitive and inclusive manner.
* Patience and Empathy: The ability to remain patient and empathetic with students who may face additional challenges due to language barriers or SEN.
Desirable Skills:
* SEN Qualifications: Additional qualifications in Special Educational Needs (e.g., SENCo qualification, Autism Awareness, Behaviour Management techniques).
* Experience with Adult Learners: Experience teaching adult ESOL learners, particularly those with additional needs.
* Knowledge of Assistive Technology: Familiarity with assistive technologies and digital resources that can support students with SEN in learning English (e.g., speech-to-text, audiobooks, screen readers).
* First Aid Training: Paediatric or adult first aid training (desirable but not essential)
