About the Role We are seeking a dynamic and inspiring Consultant Psychiatrist to lead our team at Baldock Manor.
As a visible and influential figure, you will foster a professional and open culture that empowers our clinical staff to provide exceptional, compassionate care.
This role requires collaboration with a multi-professional management team to ensure our care meets the highest regulatory standards.
Your leadership will shape the strategic direction of our unit, prioritising safe, effective, and individualised care for every patient.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: In collaboration with other clinical colleagues and managers, develop a comprehensive treatment service delivering high-quality responses to those suffering from mental health problems, based on quality assured evidence-based practice.
Provide advice on psychiatric care for clients within their respective service area, taking overall responsibility for a defined caseload of patients.
Work closely with the multidisciplinary team, fostering positive working relationships with medical directors, hospital directors, clinical services managers, and external stakeholders.
Oversee the performance of Consultant Psychiatrists, ensuring systems are in place to support appraisal and revalidation, and identify, investigate, and escalate concerns about conduct or performance.
Maintain effective, professional leadership, providing clinical supervision and mentorship alongside other Consultant Psychiatrists.
Support the appraisal and revalidation process for other Psychiatrists in collaboration with the Responsible Officer.
Represent the business externally, raising its profile and establishing working relationships with commissioners, community teams, and key partners.
Participate in an out-of-hours rota with other Consultant Psychiatric colleagues, ensuring adequate consultant cover across the hospital as required.
Contribute to quality enhancement and service evaluation projects, undertaking relevant research for short- or long-term service improvement.
Engage in educational and health promotion activities within the Mental Health Service, liaising regularly with General Practitioners.
Lead the CPD programme for the hospital, fostering a culture of learning and providing input on initiatives requiring a medical perspective.
Our ideal candidate possesses: Approved Clinician status.
Section 12(2) approval.
A member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) and in good CPD standing.
Current registration with GMC.
At least five years' experience in an in-patient setting.
Experience working in a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit.
Experience working in Acute Services (male or female).
Ability to take independent clinical decisions and demonstrate clinical leadership.
Knowledge of evidence-based practice.
In-depth knowledge of MHA and MCA.
Effective communication skills – verbal and written.
Up-to-date knowledge of current practices in in-patient Psychiatry.
Able to organise oneself and prioritise clinical need.
Evidence of participation in audit.
Hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
Permanent or fixed-term contract available.
Baldock Manor is a 40-bed hospital in north Hertfordshire, providing specialist psychiatric services for adults.
Our services include PICU and acute wards, offering care and support for women at crisis level and older adults requiring stabilisation of their mental health.
