We have an excellent teaching and research base.We operate an annualised rota working pattern for our consultants and the successful candidates would be required to be part of this.This post is fixed term for 12 months.
Main duties of the job The clinical assessment, resuscitation and timely onward referral, admission or discharge of all types of patients attending the Emergency Department.
To take ongoing responsibility for patients under their care.To provide professional and effective leadership and to be immediately available to give a Consultant opinion, guidance and advice on any patient seen in the Emergency Department when on clinical duty.To share responsibility with colleagues for the day-to-day management of the Emergency Department.To teach and train intermediate and junior medical staff, nursing staff, medical students and paramedical staff.Contribute to production, update and maintenance of departmental guidelines, protocols and procedures in line with evidence based best practice.Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with Medical colleagues in other specialities and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.Participate in the on-call rota on an equal basis with Consultant colleagues to ensure that appropriate Emergency services are provided out of normal working hours.Take an appropriate share of responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the speciality, to include appraisal.Develop and maintain good communications with General Practitioners and appropriate external agencies.To have responsibility for, and actively participate in, continuing professional development (CPD).

Job description Job responsibilities Please see the attached Job Description and Person Specification for full details.This post is fixed term for 12 months.The department is a 24/7 unit dealing with unselected patients of all ages.
Patients referred from General Practitioners to Surgical and Medical specialties are seen and assessed by the relevant doctors in the Emergency Assessment Unit or ED.The facilities in the ED include: 2 Receptions and three waiting areas,Triage room adult,Three Resuscitation bays (one fully paediatric equipped)Five high dependency baysEight low dependency cubiclesThree bay ENP zone including eye cubicleThree GP exam roomsOne privacy roomX-ray facility for ED within footprint of the departmentRelatives roomFully equipped teaching room with Monitor solely for ED use Rapid Assessment and Treatment (RAT) 1 mixed bay with 4 trolleys (capacity for 4 patients non COVID)1 ambulatory chair area (4 x non COVID patients accommodated on examination couches)2 Consultation Rooms Rapid assessment runs 10:00-19:00 Monday Friday Saturday and Sunday Major Assessment Area (MAA): 1 x Covid Resuscitation Bay flexible use for care of adult and paediatric Covid/Infectious Resus patients1 x negative pressure room7 x single patient rooms The Majors Assessment Area will operate 24 hours 7 days a week.
A Middle Grade Doctor and FY2/Trust Grade will be assigned to run the unit on a shift by shift basis.
Person Specification Health Essential Satisfactory Trust health screening prior to appointment Probity Essential Able to attend hospital within 30 minutes for on-call emergencies Satisfactory DRB check Qualifications Essential MBChB or MBBS or equivalent FRCEM or equivalent ALS or equivalent certification ATLS or equivalent certification APLS or equivalent certification Desirable Instructor status in life support course Entry on GMC Specialist Register and hold a licence to practise or be eligible for entry on the Register (within six months of completion of Certificate of Completion of Training) at time of interview.
Experince Essential Evidence of thorough training in Emergency Medicine Evidence of thorough training in Emergency Medicine Able to offer expert clinical opinion on all aspects within EM.
Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
Desirable Substantive work in UK Emergency Medicine Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in relevant specialty Knowledge Essential All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following:- PLAB 1, PLAB 2 Has a thorough knowledge and understanding of "Good Medical Practice" from the GMC and meets its requiremEnglish ents Ability to work as an effective part of a multidisciplinary team Ability to build good working relations with peers & staff Strong written and verbal communication skills Technical Skills Essential Able to organise and prioritise workload An understanding of accountability for patient care Clinical Governance Essential Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate personal continuing development Participation in QIP Understanding of patient safety and risk management Desirable Evidence of implementing relevant evidence-based medicine Experience of guideline appraisal Research Essential Interest in research and commitment to support research or skills in critical appraisal.
