Job summary We are looking for an experienced Band 6 Midwife to support our Student Midwives by providing both practical and clinical support.
The Student Practice Education Facilitator role is a fabulous opportunity for a Midwife to develop professional practice, support with education and training, gain leadership and management experience, and to link with our partner Higher Education Institutes (HEI's).Gloucestershire Hospitals work in close collaboration with Universities to prepare our future workforce.
The main purpose of this job role is to work closely with the Universities, the students that are placed in our maternity unit (including T-level students/Apprentice students and MSc students) and our practice supervisors, assessors and senior management team to develop quality assured placements and maximise support for all involved.The role is hours a week.
Main duties of the job Focused lead for students placed in our maternity services, our midwifery practice supervisors and practice assessors and main link to our partner HEI's.
Nationally it has been identified that there are midwifery workforce shortages.
In response to this Universities have increased the numbers of midwifery students commencing their midwifery training.
The 'Education Everyone's Business' One Gloucestershire Student Placement Expansion Project has brought healthcare provider organisations together to discuss and realise the clinical placement expansion required to support the additional students to gain the practice experience and skills they need to become confident and competent registered midwives.
This role will support the expansion project within maternity.
This will be achieved by: - Collaborating with the midwifery senior management team and area clinical leads to review clinical placement opportunities and capacity.
- Supporting clinical teams to trial new practice supervision models such as CLiP coaching models.
- Providing professional support and facilitation for unit managers / team leaders, practice educators to provide quality work-based placements to enable staff to develop the right skills, values and behaviours to deliver high quality, safe patient care.
-To work collaboratively with Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

We deliver around 6000 babies a year across our two free-standing birth units, an along-side birth unit, home births and an Obstetric unit, offering midwives the opportunity to work in a variety of settings in our community services, birth units and Delivery Suite Job description Job responsibilities - When new cohorts of students commence their training, welcome them and provide a localised induction to Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and our maternity services.
- Have regular contact with all T-level students/Apprentice students, Midwifery and MSc students by both frequently visiting them in their clinical placement areas, running drop-ins and arranging various group sessions - Facilitate local teaching sessions for students as requested by the students and identified as required by the midwifery team, practice development and risk management team.
- Involve Students in maternity education and learning opportunities such as risk management meetings and training sessions.
- Work closely with the practice development team and support teaching on maternity mandatory training days which will include facilitating training to students on the training days.
- Facilitate local simulation training and support students to assist teaching working on the principle that teaching strengthens learning - Alongside the Recruitment and Retention Midwife facilitate Taster Days for people interested in pursuing a career in midwifery.
- Maintain the Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor database and support Midwives once they have completed the preceptorship programme to access and complete appropriate and relevant SSSA training in a timely manner.
- Provide responsive support for Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors.
- Provide mandatory updates on the maternity mandatory day about supervision and assessment of students.
- In the incidence a student is failing provide presence and support to the Student, Practice Assessor and Academic Supervisor through this process and complete relevant documentation and action plans.
- Support the clinical leads with timely off duty for students that ensures an optimal balance of continuity and variation of Practice Supervisors.
- Coordinate allocation of Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors.
- Review student placement feedback and respond accordingly.
- Support the recruitment process of Midwives.
- Support the practice development team and newly qualified midwives during the initial preceptorship period following qualification to ensure a smooth transition from student to midwife.
- Ensuring placement capacity in clinical area is well utilised and maximised but not exceeded.
Lead with forming relationships with new academic partnerships.
Leadership and Management - Work with clinical staff at all levels, other organisations in the health community and placement staff within Higher Education institutions, to ensure high quality clinical placements that provide learners with positive and appropriate clinical experiences across the duration of their pre-registration midwifery programme - Contribute to a positive culture, demonstrating effective professional attitudes and behaviours internally and external to the Trust, to enable continuous quality and service improvement, and maintain good working relationships - Advise, develop and ensure quality of learning opportunities within a multi-professional framework in order that the service users receive a high standard of care.
- Advise and support practice staff who have failing or challenging learners or difficult practice situations.
- Develop, embed and maintain coaching (collaborative learning in practice placement) experience models to support learners in the workplace; encourage innovative approaches to enhance student learning experience to enable attainment of competency and proficiency.
- Implement learning interventions and actively monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions in the work place that enhance the students placement experience.
- To support the multidisciplinary team in the development of staff in the clinical area, and act as a clinical / educational resource to all members of the multidisciplinary team.
- To positively promote the use of clinical supervision and reflective practice amongst the team and to personally engage in the supervision process as a supervisee.
- To develop facilitation skills to be able to facilitate action learning sets.
- To support the implementation of any changes as a result of Governmental and Regulatory Body recommendations.
- Attend trust and HEI meetings as representative by developing and maintaining strong communication links to enhance partnership working.
- To contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of a core standard curriculum of clinical skills.
This will include providing skills sessions in conjunction with other members of the Practice Development team on mandatory student days, whereby midwifery students will be encouraged to attend and participating in university skills teaching and OSCE assessments in order to benchmark standards.
- Support learners in the transition between student and qualified midwife by working with practice supervisors and assessors, managers and practice development with the preceptorship programme.
- Promote the Trust as an employer.
Maintain records of end of course destination of student midwives and assist with recruitment events.
- Comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual Handling, clinical equipment competency, risk management, Data Protection Acts and patient confidentiality at all times.
This will include demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT and to undergo regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding matters.
- In conjunction with their manager, identify training needs of self, participating in clinical audit and quality projects which contribute to the departmental education programme.
- Report near misses and untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or medicine administration errors as detailed in the departmental and Trust protocols.
Assist lead staff in investigating incidents as required.

Education and Training - Facilitate regular learning sessions for midwifery students also incorporating a CLIP and a learn by teaching type approach whereby with your guidance senior students facilitate sessions for junior students.
- Supporting clinical staff in the implementation of NMC Education and Practice Supervision and Assessment standards in clinical areas, facilitating uptake at ward level and ensuring within the midwifery preceptorship period newly qualified Midwives are supported to do their training.
- Support Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors to support their teaching and assessment skills and develop their confidence.
- Design and deliver training sessions and comprehensive presentations to staff and students across the Trust, promoting evidenced based practice and assisting in the development of new and improved practices.
- Ensure comprehensive evaluation of content, methods of delivery and impact occurs which informs subsequent delivery.
- Ensure practice educators are educated and developed to support midwifery learners in practice.
- Ensure sufficient, suitably prepared practice educators are available to support practice learning and maintain an up to date data register for the organisation which reflects the needs of the learner numbers and placements.
- Work with academic colleagues from higher and further education providing training (such as mandatory updates) and practice support to ensure registered practitioners are supported to act as appropriate practice educators to midwifery students.
