The Opportunity There are 2 aspects to the Essex Outdoors offer at Harlow, Essex Outdoors Harlow and The Lock Climbing Wall, both of which sit within the remit of the Assistant Manager role.
Essex Outdoors Harlow is a non-residential Outdoor Education centre that offers 'traditional' outdoor activities to groups and individuals.
The Lock Climbing Wall is a large indoor climbing wall that caters for public access climbing plus associated climbing courses and offers.
The purpose of this job is to ensure a safe, effective and profitable Essex Outdoors centre, to meet agreed service targets and standards.
Reporting to the Essex Outdoors Manager, this role is also required to contribute to strategic decision-making and change in delivery in accordance with the service's Business Plan.

The Assistant Manager will play a leading role in ensuring the effectiveness and profitability of the centre.
The service operates under tight financial constraints and the Assistant Manager must demonstrate excellent business acumen across all aspects of the business, whilst ensuring all legislative requirements are adhered to for the safety of employees and customers of the centres.
Accountabilities Responsible for the day to day management of the operational requirements for the centre (.
delivery & Facilities .
Ensure that local and national Health and Safety requirements are met.
Contribute to the formulation and implementation of annual and medium-term plans.
Support the management of Essex Outdoors employees to work in a flexible and collaborative manner across boundaries as part of project or process teams in support of key outcomes.
Ensure the proper assessment, management, and mitigation of risk, including Health and Safety and Business Continuity is completed to delivery activities.
Planning and delivery of high quality and consistent training programmes for existing and new staff, along with the provision of external training as required.
Ensuring compliance with the various legislative and regulatory requirements affecting Essex Outdoors and its activities.
Establishing measurable standards for all operational functions, for example, the appropriate management of enquiries and delivery of activities, to achieve the best experience for our customers.
Ensure the centre functions to the highest standards of customer service with the most effective use of resources.
Use specialist skill, knowledge and experience to contribute to the development of new, or adapt existing products and services, in response to customer feedback, and to widen the range of offer available to core customers and new markets.
Manage the development of organisational capability through good people management, including the training, development, mentoring and coaching of team members.
Thinking creatively, challenging the norms, and constructively challenging those around them (including those more senior) to ensure continuous improvement, commercial astuteness, and inspire the same in employees.
Delivery of a consistent and professional profitable catering offer, including compliance with all requisite food safety standards.
Proactive management of built assets, facilities and equipment, with minor and major maintenance schedules maintained and implemented, and additional requirements highlighted for consideration.
Manage contractors and works as required.
Develop and maintain excellent links with key National Governing Bodies relevant to the site and activities, including but not limited to: British Canoeing, British Cycling, British Mountaineering Council, National Indoor Climbing Association Scheme, Association of British Climbing Walls, Royal Yachting Association, and the European Ropes Course Association.
Keep up to date with developments in the outdoor education sector.
Work collaboratively with partners to ensure the best overall outcome for the people of Essex, whilst protecting ECC's and Essex Outdoors' interests.
Manage time and workload effectively, take responsibility for all aspects of your work.
Specific individual and shared targets and objectives are defined annually within the performance management framework.
Any other duties as reasonably requested commensurate with the level of the role and responsibilities.
The Experience You Will Bring Educated to degree level or equivalent through experience.
A qualification in Outdoor Education and/or Management is desirable.
Evidence experience of delivery and/or management experience within an indoor climbing wall setting.
Evidence of continuing, recent personal development.
Excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
Excellent attention to detail.
Ability to use initiative.
Ability to spot and resolve problems efficiently.
Evidence of successfully delivering outcomes working with young people in the field of Outdoor, Environmental and Residential Education.
Detailed understanding and awareness of the national curriculum and the ability to map educational outcomes to Outdoor Learning activities.
Should hold a range of relevant NGB qualifications.
Significant experience in the management of the delivery of Outdoor and/or Environmental educational programmes.
Leading teams, project and program development experience.
Flexibility Please note that the job role requires you to be mobile throughout an operational area.
Therefore, the post holder will need to have a driving licence and access to a vehicle, or the ability to meet the mobility requirements of the role through other means.
