Job summary This post in Paediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition is a 10 PA post replacing a Consultant who will be retiring.
The postholder will support the current demand for out-patient and in-patient activity in the Gastroenterology department, including supporting the Trust-wide Nutrition Support and Intestinal Failure Service.
The department is a regional tertiary gastroenterology service providing for children with acute and chronic intestinal disorders.
It manages one of the largest number of children under 16 years of age with Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Europe and one of the largest cohorts of children with Intestinal Failure.
The successful candidate will have extensive experience in all areas of paediatric gastroenterology and will undertake diagnostic procedures (upper gastrointestinal endoscopy & colonoscopy).
Main duties of the job This post is designed to support the inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology service and in managing intestinal failure, with the Nutrition Support Team, including endoscopy and wireless capsule endoscopy.
The Job plan will offer 10 programmed activities per week.
Fixed weekly sessions vary according to service duties.
During the on service week, the consultant is responsible for all in patients.

Job description Job responsibilities Duties vary according to whether on service week and would include: Average of outpatient clinics /week Endoscopy lists and wireless capsule endoscopy cases Handover sessions and Business meeting 5 multidisciplinary ward rounds per week (when on ward service) or a Nutrition Support ward rounds when on Nutrition Service Radiology and histology review meetings IBD case reviews Parenteral nutrition meeting with nutritional care team weekly Departmental educational programme, including seminars, journal club Service The Service Consultant manages all the Gastroenterology in-patient activity and reviews in-patients under other specialties as Gastroenterology consultations.
Domicillary activity is managed by telephone support for regional network colleagues and families at home by departmental nursing and medical staff.
Consultant input is provided each day in managing outpatients at home (SBARs) to provide assessment and treatment at home and prevent admission to hospital.
Patients attending for day case admissions for infusions and other treatments may be reviewed and emergency endoscopy for patients with gastrointestinal bleeding.
The service consultant grades referrals for outpatient and inpatient review.
Nutrition Service week The Consultant will supervise one Nutrition Support Ward round, teaching and training and daily support for Parenteral Nutrition prescribing.
There will be two out-patient clinics and one endoscopy list each week.
Non-service week The consultant will be based in clinic, endoscopy and office-based admin.
There will be two or three clinics and one or two endoscopy lists, averaging four direct clinical care sessions per week, with allocated time for clinical administration (letters, results and reports) Additional sessions could include: - Teaching & Education - Audit & Clinical Governance Person Specification Qualifications and Training Essential Full GMC registration / MRCPCH by examination or equivalent / Level 3 Child Protection training / Valid Basic Life Support provider training On the GMC's Specialist Register (CCT in Paediatric Gastroenterology) OR within six months of CCT at time of scheduled interview OR a minimum of 36 months equivalent specialist training in paediatric gastroenterology which includes six months in hepatology in an approved centre or equivalent training overseas OR An established consultant in paediatric gastroenterology elsewhere, eligible for inclusion on the specialist register Desirable Higher Degree (MD, PhD, MSc, etc.)
& APLS Provider Clinical Experience Essential General paediatric experience Minimum of 36 months training at SpR/ST level in paediatric gastroenterology including six months in pediatric hepatology, to the satisfaction of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Training in Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition (or equivalent) Appropriate progression of career to date Competent in upper GI endoscopy Desirable Experience in managing children with intestinal failure, home parenteral nutrition and working in a multidisciplinary nutrition support team in a tertiary centre.
Competent in ileocolonoscopy and endoscopic management of GI bleeding Clinical Effectiveness Governance and audit Essential Evidence of recent audit completion Desirable Evidence of recent audit that led to service improvement Academic Achievements Research/Publications Essential Paper, poster or presentation at regional or national meeting relevant to the Speciality Desirable Evidence of or working towards a peer review publication in the Speciality Recognised authority or research interest on an area of the Speciality Ability to direct research leading to publication Skills and attributes Essential Good communication skills Good team working abilities Leadership skills Flexibility Able to work calmly under pressure Demonstrates Honesty, Probity and Integrity Desirable Evidence of recent 360 degree appraisal to demonstrate professional skills and team working Management and Administration Experience Essential Experience in aspects of management in a clinical setting Desirable Attendance at recognised management course Teaching Essential Experience and commitment to undergraduate/postgraduate teaching Desirable Evidence of training in teaching, assessment and appraisal
