Job summary This is a 12-month post within the Paediatric Plastic Surgical service at Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital.
Birmingham Children's Hospital is a specialist tertiary referral centre treating paediatric patients with plastic surgical problems from across the West Midlands and beyond.
It provides an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to general and specialist paediatric plastic surgery.
The post holder will get broad experience of children's hand and upper limb surgery including brachial plexus surgery, vascular anomalies, surgery for cleft lip and/or palate and facial palsy including corneal re-innervation as well as all aspects of burn care in children.
It will be expected that applicants will already have completed the majority of their training in plastic surgery and will be using this opportunity to gain sub-specialist experience.
The consultant body will support candidates who wish to prepare for the FRCS (Plast) exam.
Main duties of the job This is a paid full-time post which will rotate through the sub-specialist services of plastic surgery including surgery for cleft lip and palate, burns, congenital hand and upper limb and hand trauma.
It is expected that Senior Clinical Fellows will participate in all departmental activities including on call, daily ward rounds, elective and trauma operating lists and peri-operative care of these patients, audit and teaching.
Normal Working day is 8am-5pm and will include attending elective surgeries, seeing patients in out-patient's clinics and managing patients on your firm peri-operatively.
This will be determined by the weekly plastic surgical rota.
Middle grades currently do a 1 in 8 12-hour shift system.
On call duties include: A ward round of all plastic surgery inputs and management of these patients with support from the plastic surgical consultants.
Attend the Emergency Department to assess, plan and deliver treatment of patients referred to plastic surgery Take referrals both from within the trust and our network of referring trusts from across the region and provide appropriate management advice.
Perform emergency/urgent operations for patients who require it with support from a consultant.
Please note there is a speciality SHO on call below the middle grade, but they are shared so there is a significant proportion of SHO administrative work that may need to be done by the trainee.

Job description Job responsibilities Learning opportunities Gain experience in the emergency management of plastic surgical injuries in children including how to assess and care for children with physical injury and their families.
Gain understanding and experience of the assessment and multidisciplinary management of children and adults with cleft lip/palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction including the opportunity to see and understand the input of all members of the multidisciplinary team.
Gain experience of the principles and management of the care of children with other complex conditions including congenital hand and upper limb conditions, brachial plexus injury, facial palsy, vascular anomalies, burns including again understanding of the input of each member of the multidisciplinary team involved.
Acquire technical surgical expertise in both general and subspecialty areas of paediatric plastic surgery.
Teaching Senior clinical fellows will participate in departmental teaching sessions which will be delivered by plastic surgical consultants in the service, and which will cover the syllabus of paediatric plastic surgery required for the FRCS (Plast).
Senior Clinical Fellows may be expected to prepare and present at teaching and audit meetings.
Teaching may be expected for undergraduates, Core Trainees, Plastic Surgery Specialist Trainees, and nursing or allied health professionals.
In discussion with their Educational Supervisor, Senior Clinical Fellows will also be expected to take advantage of learning opportunities that arise in the form of lectures or courses.
ON CALL REQUIREMENTS The post holder will be required to participate in an on-call rota.
Currently the on-call commitment is a 1 in 8 12-hour shift resident on call (subject to change with notice).
Person Specification Qualifications and clinical experience Essential Medical Degree from a recognised University A minimum of 6 years full time post graduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part time basis) or equivalent experience and competencies.
Evidence of progress in Plastic Surgery Training or equivalent Programme to successful completion of the programme or having passed exit examination in Plastic Surgery at the time of taking up the post, or equivalent Previous experience in Hand Surgery Desirable Other Educational Qualification (ALS/APLS/ATLS) Eligibility Essential Full GMC registration Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice
