Job Description AECOM is currently recruiting for a Principal Structural Engineer to join our Basingstoke office, part of our UK & Ireland Building Engineering team.
This particular opportunity has arisen within our South West & Wales (SW&W) business unit which has teams in our Basingstoke, Bristol and Plymouth offices and focusses on projects within the Built Environment, particularly in Defence, Aviation and Education projects.
Our work regularly uses cutting edge software and advanced analytical approaches.  Our structural engineering solutions enable clients to undertake ambitious construction projects worldwide.
The team undertake a wide range of unusual structural engineering projects including those which feature seismic, blast and other dynamic loads.  The right candidate will need to demonstrate a desire to be challenged as well as being able to contribute to the range of skills that we are able to draw on to deliver the technical aspects of projects.  In return we can offer a challenging and rewarding role, career development, an empowered and supportive working environment and a competitive reward package.
This opportunity would suit an individual who has experience in undertaking technical tasks, but is now looking to take on the challenge of leading and delivering complex projects on behalf of key clients.
Some of the recent projects our team have completed include: HMNB Devonport: Supporting the development of infrastructure at HMNB Devonport, the team have been involved in the design of seismically qualified upgrade works to existing dry docks required to support deep maintenance of nuclear powered submarines.
Heathrow T2 Baggage Programme: A £635M scheme to replace the time expired outgoing baggage system.
The programme maintains the existing system until the new system is commissioned and enables the creation and adaptation of the structures to install the new 1800 bag / hour baggage solution.
Livingstone Academy, Bournemouth: Civil, structural and fire engineering services for the design of a £2.7m academy school in central Bournemouth.
The project involves the refurbishment and conversion of existing Grade II listed buildings as well as construction of a new 5 storey teaching block.
We are increasingly supporting new and exciting projects across these markets, in the UK and globally.
In particular relating to delivery of nuclear infrastructure in support of the AUKUS programme.
Location: Our Basingstoke office is only a short walk from the railway station in the centre of Basingstoke and has excellent transport links being only 45 minutes from London and conveniently located close to the M3 for road links.  The office is home to around 300 staff including 50 civil and structural staff as well as accommodating busy geotechnical engineering, maritime, coastal engineering, aviation, and bridges teams.  We are looking to enhance and grow the structures team with individuals with a sound technical background and who share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.
The Basingstoke structural engineering team consists of 15 structural engineering and BIM specialists who work on a wide variety of projects in the aviation, defence and education sectors throughout the project life-cycle from concept through to completion.  The team prides itself on a reputation for being able to support specialist structural engineering projects and acts as a centre of excellence for dynamics, finite element analysis and physical security engineering.

Job Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to: Take responsibility for leading projects with a significant analytical component.
Engage with clients to define requirements, present proposals, discuss project progress and undertake presentation of project results.
Effectively control commercial, managerial and technical aspects of projects or parts thereof for which you are responsible.
Source opportunities and prepare fee proposals for submission to client, including resource and programme information.
Undertake, or lead a team of engineers and technicians in undertaking, technically challenging projects without supervision within prescribed programme constraints.
Co-ordinate project delivery with internal and external clients.
Undertake structural engineering projects, by performing analyses and calculations as appropriate, along with preparing design reports for client submission without supervision.
Supervise work undertaken by others, ensuring that it is carried out to the appropriate technical standard and that it is managed to programme and budget.
Participate in interdisciplinary review of project deliverables.
Perform quality control review of design calculations or drawings.
Mentor others in their professional development.
Have a desire to learn new skills and the ability to consider the wider engineering issues related to the analyses being undertaken.

Minimum Requirements Experience in the advanced use of a commercially available finite element software package (e.g.
ANSYS, LUSAS, STAAD) including non-linear, time and frequency domain methods.  Experience using ANSYS preferred.
Ability to communicate in the English language, both written and verbal, with an excellent ability to explain complex engineering principals in a manner which can be understood by a non-specialist Able to decide on the level of reliance and accuracy to attach to a variety of results obtained from finite element analysis and to interpret results into practical engineering solutions Demonstrable track record in the delivery of projects for clients, or the ability to demonstrate significant contribution towards project delivery Able to work on a range of projects simultaneously Required Qualifications Masters degree or equivalent in an appropriate Civil or Structural Engineering discipline Bachelors degree (min.
2:1) in an appropriate Civil or Structural Engineering discipline Must be a Chartered Engineer with ICE or IStructE.
