University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW)An opportunity has arisen for a full-time vacancy (37.5 hours over 7 days). Part-time considered for an Orthopaedic Practitioner to work in the fracture and elective Orthopaedic Outpatient department. The successful applicant will need excellent communication skills. The role includes working with patients in both the outpatient and inpatient settings across the Adult and Children's services at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Bristol Children's Hospital. In order to undertake this role, you must hold the British Orthopaedic Association casting qualification and have registration with the Association of Orthopaedic Practitioners.
You must be able to demonstrate a high level of skill and expertise in casting, splinting, and bracing techniques, have an in-depth understanding of the care of patients with plaster casts and orthotic appliances, and be fully aware of the complications associated with them.
We are seeking a dynamic, patient-centered, hardworking, and enthusiastic individual. You should be able to work autonomously with excellent time management, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
Main duties of the jobTo be competent in the application, adjustment, and removal of all types of casts as prescribed by a clinician.To participate in the assessment, planning, and evaluation of care for the patient who is requiring casting or splinting, referring to the clinician as required.Assess different initial conditions and provide advice to clinicians on the appropriate course of action and materials to be used.Obtains informed consent from patients when carrying out programmes of care.Promptly alerts the nurse in charge of any issues or risks within the clinical setting.To provide expert specialist technical support and advice, and a casting service for the Trust. This will cover Fracture and elective clinics, Theatre, Wards, and Emergency Departments across adult and children services.To use evidence-based practice to assess, develop, and implement care.To provide advice on the application of casts for specialist conditions i.e. total contact casting and its wound care for diabetic patients and hip spicas for paediatric patients.Instruct clinical staff on the use and application of splints and braces and maintain competency records.Identify individual patient problems and prioritise care.Carry out appropriate aspects of care, including dressings, suture/clip removals, and K wire removal.About usUniversity Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is one of the largest acute Trusts in the country, bringing together a combined workforce of over 13,000 staff and over 100 different clinical services across 10 different sites, serving a core population of more than 500,000 people across South West England. Person SpecificationQualifications and TrainingQualified Practitioner British Orthopaedic Association Registration with the BOAWork towards relevant university accredited post-basic study programmesSkills and AbilitiesMaking, adapting, and applying specialist braces and supporting the provision of Orthotic serviceTo manage wound care in accordance with theoretical and practical elements based on Trust policies and proceduresAbility to recognise symptoms relating to threat to life/limb and intervene as necessaryIn the area of specialist practice, assess and make clinical judgements to determine correct intervention and demonstrate competence in clinical skills relevant to clinical areaTeaching and supervisory skillsAbility to work unsupervisedGood interpersonal and communication skills, able to communicate effectively with patients, carers, relatives, and other members of staffExcellent interpersonal skillsKnowledge and ExperienceExtensive experience of Trauma and Orthopaedic casting, functional bracing, and musculoskeletal anatomy and physiologyBroad knowledge and experience of clinical practice within a hospital environment and specialist clinical and technical knowledge in the application and removal of all types of casting and bracingSignificant and relevant experience post-qualificationExperience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team covering various departments within adult and children servicesExperience of teachingDisclosure and Barring Service CheckThis post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, and as such, it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
