Job summary To provide a quality service to all patients, visitors, and staff throughout the Trust, by carrying out their wide range of duties, including moving and handling, driving and security, in a professional manner observing all Health and Safety and departmental codes of practice and procedures.
Ensuring timely transportation to and from appointments at hospitals, inpatient areas, Emergency Departments or other places of care.
To assess and make a transport plan for patients with medical support requirements and ensure a safe transport plan is made.
Main duties of the job Physical Skills The role will involve walking in excess of 10 miles per day, driving Trust Vehicles, moving heavy loads and on occasion, working outside in poor weather conditions.
Moving and handling of patients will be required to support each patient according to their individual needs.
Responsibility for Patient Care Every patient must be treated with dignity and respect and transported around the hospital safely and with courtesy.
Assessments will be made to support the development of a safe transport plan for a patient with medical needs, ensuring the plan is robust and the transport provision are trained and able to meet the patients medical and support needs.
Patient confidentiality must be observed at all times.
Responsibility for Policy/Service Development The post holder will follow policies relating to their role and level of responsibility.
Responsibilities for Financial and Physical Resources The post holder will be responsible for the safe use of all trust equipment issued to or used by them.
The post holder may be responsible for patients valuables during their transport journey.
Responsibilities for Human Resources The post holder will be required from time to time to demonstrate work activities related to their role.
Responsibility for Information Resources Basic Knowledge of IT inputting.

Job description Job responsibilities Core Responsibilities Convey allocated patients and escorts to and from home address, to and from hospital or other treatment centres and between hospitals, other treatment centres or care facilities To undertake a full range of the patient transport and care assistant duties including stretcher work and wheelchair clamping Safely complete the moving and handling of patients to support their transport journey, adhering to policies and procedures, workling inline with the training provided.
Assess individual patients to create a safe transport plan whilst managing any medical requirements the patient may have.
Maintain a high standard of vehicle and equipment serviceability, cleanliness and permanent readiness in the event of a major incident Carry out daily vehicle checks and report deflects promptly in accordance with service instructions Provide a patient focused service and an appropriate level of customer support that engenders customer satisfaction and confidence in the Trust.
Drive allocated service vehicle, usually an ambulance, as road traffic law dictates, in a manner appropriate to the conditions, and with due consideration for the safety of vehicle occupants and othe road users, in non-emergency conditions Provide a quality of travel that is both a smooth and comfortable experience for passengers and non-detrimental to the patients condition Maintain a high standard of housekeeping and cleanliness in all work areas Undertake long distance journeys as requested Within competencies, assist colleagues when necessary to do so Ensure the patients home is secured if left unattended and maintain the security of, when entrusted with responsibility for, valuables including money and personal belongings whilst the patient is in the post holders care.
Ensure security of, and apply appropriate care and maintenance (including restocking as appropriate) to, personal protective equipment, personal issue handling equipment and first aid bag.
Be of smart and professional appearance, act in accordance with the Trusts code of conduct and be helpful, polite and courteous in manner at all times Carry out duty of care to patients and, where necessary, the patients carer/relative and/or nurse escort in accordance with service instructions.
Deal with patients sympathetically at all times, offering appropriate support and reassurance as necessary, whilst respecting their dignity, cultural and religious beliefs Demonstrate understanding and compassion towards terminally ill patients and their carers, observing DNAR orders dependant on Locality Exchange with hospital, other medical, social services, care home and administrative support staff all condition related and domestic circumstance information necessary to the provision of quality care within a patient focused environment Ensure own compliance with patient care and safety protocols and guidelines Competence in manual handling and moving of patients, oxygen therapy, first aid including CPR; basic physiological knowledge To read more information about the advertised role, and the main job duties/responsibilities please open the Job Description and Person Specification located under the supporting documents heading.

Desirable Basic English and Maths qualification Willingness to undertake training and development as appropriate.
Desire to support patient's medical needs, utilising the skills and knowledge that you will be provided with.
Experience Essential Experience of dealing with members of the public.
Background in a health profession or a customer orientated field.
Able to work as part of a team.
Self-disciplined and able to work on own initiative.
Desirable Portering / Driving knowledge Health and safety knowledge and experience.
Previous experience of working in a hospital environment.
Previous experience of working in a health care environment.
Skills Essential Ability to walk pushing a patient in bed, on a trolley or in a wheelchair along variations in levels.
Able to carry or push items of varying weights along, variations in levels and would include some stairs.
Able to drive appropriate vehicle for the service requirements.
Ability to walk for long periods and push chairs and stretchers.
Be self-confident, diplomatic and patient.
Ability to work alone or as part of a team.
Willingness to work flexibly and to use own initiative and show a positive attitude to change.
Confidence and ability to assess patients needs and develop a safe transport plan.
To comply with all reasonable instructions given by authorised hospital staff and maintain good communications between all users of the service.
Good attendance / time keeping record.
Maintain a high standard of dress and personal hygiene and carry out duties with due regard to the health and safety of yourself and others Maintain a professional image.
