Gain experience working on complex scientific modelling, advanced diagnostics and material behaviour in extreme environments — while developing skills that set you up for a future career in research, engineering or defence science.Key criteriaStudying a relevant science or STEM degreeAt least 2:2 achieved to dateAble to start a full-time placement in August 2026Eligible to obtain UK Government security clearanceStrong analytical mindset and ability to learn new tools or methodsEffective communicator and collaborative team playerAble to work on-site in Aldermaston (commutable from Reading/Basingstoke)What you’ll doDuring your placement you will contribute to projects involving:Radiation detection analysis and experimental measurementScientific modelling (e.g., photon, neutron, electron transport codes such as MCNP)Computational physics and algorithm developmentData-driven analysis and simulation techniquesStudying material properties under extreme pressures and temperaturesMathematical modelling to solve advanced physics challengesYou’ll focus on one or two technical areas to build depth, supported by experienced scientists, a dedicated line manager and a mentor.You will also take part in:On-the-job learning and tailored professional developmentA collaborative group project with other placement studentsNetworking opportunities across early careers and technical communitiesEntry requirementsWe welcome students currently studying a degree in:Physics (Applied or Theoretical), Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Structural Engineering or related scientific disciplines.You must have achieved at least a 2:2 in your degree so far by August 2026.Benefits£23,500 salary + welcome payment9-day fortnight — every other Friday off270 hours of annual leave including bank holidaysExcellent work/life balance and early careers social communityDiscounts and salary-sacrifice schemesOccupational health and Employee Assistance ProgrammePotential for a future graduate role, based on performance and availability
