Assistant Accountant

About the role
The Assistant Accountant will play a crucial role in supporting the financial operation of the business in meeting goals and objectives of the site. Working within a small finance team, this role plays a key part in the month end close process, ensuring accurate financial reporting and contributing to the provision of sound financial information to enable meaningful forecasting and decision making. Reporting directly to the Financial Controller, the Assistant Accountant will work as part of the site Finance team.
Essential duties and tasks
- Support the Financial Controller in the month end reporting process, helping to ensure accurate financial reporting of site performance working to meeting tight group reporting deadlines.
- Preparing month end journals, including but not limited to monthly accruals, prepayments and depreciation journals.
- Ensuring balance sheet reconciliations are completed monthly and reviewed with Financial Controller
- Working with the Financial Controller on projects to drive continuous improvement within the finance department
- Assisting with monthly inventory valuations to ensure accurate stock reporting
- Turnover reconciliation to support gross sales reporting
- Ensuring the accuracy of sales value and volume data to aid weekly sales forecasting
- Reviewing sales invoicing to ensure accuracy of pricing, raising customer credit notes when required.
- Ensuring customer statements are sent, initial chasing of overdue amounts, working with Group Credit Controller to resolve any non payment issues.
- Posting cash receipts and reconciliation of bank accounts at month end.
- HMRC and government reporting, including but not limited to VAT, PPT and ONS returns
- Supporting the year end audit process, dealing with queries from auditors in a timely manner
- Responding to ad hoc queries from Corporate Finance and Site leaders, providing financial support where required
- Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting regulations and company policies.
- Providing absence cover for other finance team members as necessary
Qualifications, Education and Experience
- Finance qualification at AAT level as a minimum
- Previous experience in a similar role in a manufacturing environment
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, with high level Excel skills
- Previous experience working with Sage would be beneficial, but not essential
- Excellent numeracy and accuracy skills, with good attention to detail
- A problem solver, with a ‘can do’ attitude
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- A self starter, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
