Field Service Engineer - Cardiff - HGV / Automotive - £45k (£21.50 an hour)


Our client, the UK’s largest supplier of winter maintenance vehicles, is currently recruiting a Vehicle Field Service Engineer based in Cardiff with experience in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining commercial vehicles.


Role : Vehicle Field Service Engineer

Salary : Highly competitive, including bonus, overtime, standby allowance, and pension

Location : Cardiff (home-based with local travel)

Benefits : Fully equipped high-spec service van, paid standby, pension

Sponsorship : Not offered


The primary purpose of this position is to attend client sites to carry out essential repairs and/or maintenance on winter maintenance vehicles. Strong diagnostic skills, both mechanical and electrical, and the ability to deliver efficient on-site solutions are essential for this role.

During the off-season (summer), you will assist with fleet preparation, while call-out season runs from October to April, with flexible working hours required.


Key Responsibilities :

  • Diagnose and repair winter maintenance vehicles, attending to breakdowns at the roadside or customer site
  • Perform routine maintenance and scheduled servicing
  • Fault-finding and performing repairs on various vehicle systems
  • Complete required paperwork using a provided tablet
  • Communicate effectively with customers on-site
  • Maintain adherence to Health & Safety protocols and PPE requirements


Qualifications :

  • HGV Class 2 Licence or equivalent (required)
  • Previous experience working with Mercedes and DAF trucks (preferred)


Key Skills and Relevant Experience :

  • 3+ years of experience in commercial vehicle breakdown/roadside repairs
  • Strong diagnostic skills, both electrical and mechanical
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Adaptability to flexible working hours, especially during the winter season
