Job Description

Protecnium is an international consulting firm specializing in engineering and technician services ( We are currently looking for an SEM/SCL Shift Engineer to join our team in Toronto, Canada.


- Project: subway/tunnel project


- Estimated length: 24 months- with the possibility of being extended. In general, when the project ends, we try to place the candidate in other projects to give him/her continuity.


- Responsibilities:


  • Adopt and promote a zero harm vision in all activities.
  • Deliver assigned responsibilities with diligence and excellence.
  • Take full ownership of assigned tasks and deliverables.
  • Ensure consistent presence during required working hours to effectively fulfill responsibilities.
  • Maintain exemplary personal standards in health, safety, and environmental awareness.
  • Conduct daily HSE inspections, documenting findings, and taking corrective action as necessary. Exercise authority to halt work immediately if safety, quality, or environmental standards are compromised, and report to the manager promptly.
  • Prepare and deliver task-specific safety briefings, method statements, and risk assessments. Participate actively in daily and shift briefings to align team goals with safety protocols.
  • Promote and complete the use of Observation Cards to enhance workplace safety.
  • Prepare comprehensive documentation for all construction stages (e.g., excavation, temporary supports, reinforcement, pre- and post-pour checks).
  • Coordinate with surveyors to review and approve as-built drawings.
  • Consolidate QA documents into complete, traceable packages.
  • Ensure adherence to Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and relevant checklists during construction. Identify, document, and report Non-Conformances (NCRs) and implement corrective measures. Manage the procurement of necessary materials and equipment, including shotcrete, hauling trucks, reinforcement, and concrete.
  • Verify material deliveries, checking descriptions, quantities, and conditions before accepting them. Maintain detailed records of all resources used, ensuring alignment with project specifications and budgets.
  • Submit resource logs for additional works within 24 hours of completion.
  • Assist in preparing "look-ahead" programmes to align site activities with project milestones.
  • Ensure drawings and specifications are accurate and complete before commencing work.
  • Request missing information, materials, or resources in advance to prevent programme delays. Monitor and report daily progress against the agreed schedule using trackers, photos, and reports. Supervise and ensure work is executed per HSE, quality, and design requirements.
  • Set out and verify works accurately before commencement.
  • Collaborate with foremen, superintendents, and other team members to meet construction targets. Communicate effectively with all stakeholders, including site management, engineers, commercial teams, planners, suppliers, and client representatives.
  • Maintain detailed daily and weekly reports, including photographic records, in collaboration with the foreman and superintendent.
  • Document and communicate any changes to the scope of works or schedule.
  • Ensure work records meet project documentation requirements and retain proofs of compliance. Actively maintain strong relationships with clients, designers, suppliers, and other key stakeholders. Continuously promote and uphold professional and ethical standards within the team.
  • Undertake any additional duties as assigned to support project and team success.


- Requirements/Skills:


  • A minimum of 4 years of experience as a SEM Engineer in tunnel/railway/heavy civil construction projects or similar.
  • A bachelor's degree or studies in Civil Engineering/Geological/ Geotechnical or similar.


- Working Hours: Monday to Friday: 12 hours rotational shifts (days and nights shifts)
