Position - Class Teacher


Responsible to: Senior Management Team and Head Teacher


Key Responsibilities-


  • Be an adaptable, supportive, vigilant, positive and willing member of staff who enjoys working with children.

  • Teach pupils of all ability with commitment, enthusiasm and to a high standard of competence. Extending expectations at all times.

  • Work as a team with fellow teachers ensuring the year group works effectively and smoothly.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, allowing for the views of others.
  • Work with colleagues on all matters of common concern regarding pupils, their learning and the curriculum.
  • Ensure all lessons are well prepared, efficiently resourced and appropriate to the ability level of the children in the class.
  • Discuss in advance with the teaching assistant the resources and equipment that are required so that they may prepare what is necessary.
  • Teach and plan as an integral part of the EYFS/ Lower School/ Upper School team.
  • Demonstrate an excellent knowledge of all areas of the curriculum.
  • Keep up to date with developments in the curriculum level appropriate to the class and discuss this with the Curriculum Lead.
  • Maintain a well organised and pupil friendly and interactive learning environment.
  • Ensure that the classroom is attractive, stimulating, clean and tidy with displays that are relevant fresh and interesting – using the teaching assistant effectively.
  • Assess, record and report pupil progress, socially and academically, according to the school policy.
  • To mark all work clearly and appropriately at all times, in line with the school marking policy. This includes class work, tests, assessments, exams, class work and homework.
  • Actively invigilate and supervise tests, assessments and exams as required.
  • To use the school policies in reference to testing, assessment and pupil attainment and record and report this appropriately to the Senior Management Team and parents.
  • Be punctual with lesson times, adhering to the class timetable.
  • Promote and organise a range of curricular and extracurricular activities, for example, productions, assemblies, trips, speakers and after school clubs.
  • Contribute to the wider life of the school. Including offering to run at least one extra curricular club per week, in accordance with the contract of employment.
  • Follow the school code of conduct at all times.
  • Manage and set pupil homework, according to the school policy.
  • Keep good classroom discipline at all times, in line with the school Behaviour Policy. Using rewards and sanctions appropriately in a friendly and firm manner.
  • Be vigilant in preventing bullying and work swiftly to resolve incidents of bullying following the school’s policy.
  • Make contact with parents to discuss pupils’ behaviour, where appropriate in association with Head of Section and/or Head.
  • Liaise with Senior Leadership, and where appropriate with outside agencies.
  • Build good relationships with pupils and parents following the school’s open door policy.
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare the pupils maintaining a constant awareness of all issues relating to child protection.
  • Keep up to date with new teaching styles and innovations in education including statutory requirements and the needs of EYFS, KS1, KS2 and 11+ curriculum, as appropriate.
  • Follow the Transition Policy, working closely with the previous / next teacher and Head of Section to ensure a smooth transition for pupils moving up the school.
  • Be involved in decision making and policy development across the school in consultation with whole staff, where appropriate.
  • Feedback to whole staff of any course information or professional development enabled by the school.
  • Follow the school’s policy on emails and internet use.
  • Be vigilant in the use of all IT equipment.
  • To undertake break/lunch duties as required.
  • Attend school functions that are deemed part of the annual cycle of the school year.
  • Support and guide teaching assistants or learning support assistants, if applicable.
  • Liaise with Curriculum Lead regarding pastoral issues, relating to children and parents, as and when they arise.
  • When teaching in the EYFS, engage with and enrich play with children.
  • When teaching in the EYFS, promote constructive educational play.
  • Fulfil other reasonable duties as directed by the Head Teacher.


Administrative Duties-


  • Monitor attendance and punctuality and complete registers on time using SIMS.
  • Produce weekly plans, medium term plans and long term plans for all lessons, except languages.
  • Print and upload to Synology all weekly plans by 1pm each Thursday, in advance of the week the plan is required for. If an extension is required, notification should be provided to Miss Tilly.
  • Manage classroom resources and liaise with the Teaching Assistant.
  • Respond promptly to all school correspondence.
  • Keep clear records of pupil behaviour, completing pupil notes following any incidents.
  • Formulate and regularly review all appropriate risk assessments.


Standards and Quality Assurance-


  • Act in a professional manner at all times.
  • Support the aims, ethos and values of the school.
  • Effectively contribute to the school standards.
  • Have positive, professional relationships with all staff members.
  • Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality, attendance and behaviour, in and out of school.
  • Attend team and staff meetings.
  • Attend other relevant meetings as required.
  • Undertake professional duties that may be reasonably assigned by the Head Teacher.
  • Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety.
  • Undertake first aid duties as required.
  • Attend school events including, assemblies, performances, fayres, Parents’ Evenings, trips, overnight residential trips, such as PGL, trips abroad and Friends of Heath House meetings.
  • Make points clearly and effectively, allowing for the views of others.
  • Keep records effectively in relation to school expectations.
  • Actively keep up to date with changes to the school policy documents.


Other Duties-


  • To undertake any other duties which may be regarded within the nature of the grading of the post, as specified by the Head Teacher.
  • The post holder must comply with the schools Health & Safety policy and Equal Opportunities Policy.
  • Extend and update personal IT skills appropriately.
  • The post holder must take an active role in their own professional development, attending all appropriate training courses offered by Heath House.
  • Offer personal training and development ideas to the Curriculum Lead and Senior Management Team.
  • Cover other classes as required by the Head Teacher when required.
  • Maintain the high expectations of Heath House and its parents regarding educational standards and behaviour.
  • Participate in arrangements made for job appraisals and reviews.
  • Expect a list of other duties that the Head Teacher may from time to time ask you to perform.
