Job Description

We are working on a very exciting 12-months parental cover opportunity for a famous publisher of academic and commercial books Our client is an award-winning publisher of digital academic resources who is looking to appoint a Senior Commissioning Editor /Publisher on a 4-day a week basis beginning form April 2025, to drive forward the commissioning pipeline of an impressive Classical Studies list. You'll get a chance to work on one of the most established lists which spans ancient drama as well as classical language teaching, across textbooks, research monographs, and reference titles

This role is based in London with 2 days a week in office.

Role details:

Salary: starting from £37,000 FTE

Location: London (hybrid)

Working Hours: 4-day-a-week (28-hours-a-week)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic direction and commercial responsibility for Classical Studies. Identify priority areas and product types for development and growth
  • Commission new books to meet market needs in secondary-school and higher-education markets, focusing on core monograph series and standalone titles
  • Monitor, review, and analyse the performance of the list
  • Attend conferences, campus visits, and sales conferences both in the UK and internationally
  • Collaborate with marketing, sales, production, and design teams, and liaise with the US office and external stakeholders
  • Manage the Assistant Editor for Classical Studies

About you:

The ideal candidate will ideally have familiarity with Classical Studies and a network of relevant contacts, and demonstrate a good knowledge of the higher education market and exams, as well as an understanding of academic publishing trends, including digital and Open Access publishing. Experience in line management is an advantage as this person will have direct management of an Assistant Editor.

The candidate should be a proactive, confident self-starter and a collaborative team player with a creative and commercial approach to list development and commissioning. Strong analytical and financial skills are required, along with competence in using publishing software systems.
