Job title: Section Engineer
Location: Swynnerton, Staffordshire
Contract length: 6 month initial contract - potential to be extended
IR35 Status: Inside of scope
Balfour Beatty are looking to appoint a Section Engineer to work on the 2nd phase of the HS2 works in the Swynnerton area, covering 65 km of land. This is an initial 6 month contract but may be extended further if required.
The Section Engineer will initially be involved in surveying and pricing (sketching and drawings) of the area to return the land to its prior state in order to provide the costing for the full works to be done and closed down. The Section Engineer will then look to manage the works completed such as removing salt piles etc. The successful Section Engineer will have previous Site / Section Engineer experience on HS2 works or in similar Civils, Highways, Water or Utilities projects. Previous knowledge and experience in U&A’s of noise levels, road closures etc would be ideal.
There is 67km of land so travel will be within this site area using an onsite vehicle.
Responsibilities

Conduct surveys and produce pricing documentation
*
Put sketches together of the required area
*
Manage a section of the works, according to a specific discipline including management of a team of Site Engineers within the same discipline.
*
Guides & coaches site engineers in technical requirements and techniques of setting out
*
Guides and coaches site engineers in resolution of construction issues, drawing on experience and accepted industry best practice
*
Reviews Method Statements and Risk Assessments and makes improvements as appropriate
*
Carries out field audits and confirms the sufficiency of control documentation
*
Ensuring the production and implementation of Permits to Work, specifically Permits to Dig, are done correctly
*
Strong understanding of temporary works and timescales for implementation into the works
*
Motivate team and manage performance; monitor the competency of team members and undertake training/ coaching as appropriate
*
Maintains accurate diary, including dialogue with external organisations (subcontractors)
*
Monitors / reviews weekly costs
*
Involved in the procurement of subcontractors
*
Manages sub contractors
*
Understands cost and value
*
Drafts correspondence to sub contractors, suppliers and Client
Key Skills / Experience
*
Previous Section Engineer experience in similar relevant projects
*
HS2 experience ideal - Open to Civils, Highways, Water, Utilities etc
*
Holds a current driving licence and CSCS Card.
*
SSSTS or SMSTS qualified
*
Previous knowledge and experience in U&A’s of noise levels, road closures etc
*
Any environmental or ecology knowledge/experience would be ideal
*
Understands method statements and risk assessments, able to develop new and improved safe systems of work
*
Understands the principles of Accident / Incident Investigation and has good working knowledge of the process
*
Good working knowledge of current H&S Legislation
*
A full understanding of technical requirements and techniques of setting out and coaching of team members
*
Allocating correct resource levels and identifies additional requirements
*
Track record of solution orientated approach to issue resolution
*
Able to measure and track KPIs for enhanced productivity
*
Strong knowledge and management of construction process in one or more of the following areas: Earthworks/Drainage, Pavement, Comms, Structures, Roadworks
