Our work is essential to enable HS2 trains to travel between London and Birmingham as well as continue their journey up to Manchester. It’s an incredibly exciting time to join us - we’re at peak construction with work really ramping up on a broad range of assets including bridges, tunnels and viaducts. Plus you’d join 9,000 people across 72 nationalities working on this exciting section of HS2 across the region.

We currently have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Junior Ecologist within the environment. This role will be based on site in Birmingham. 

To support the BBV Construction Ecology Lead, Ecology Specialists and Ecology Deputies with:

• Supporting the delivery of ecological mitigation requirements to programme and to the HS2 Technical Standards, policy and legal requirements.

• Supporting the on-site implementation of ecological method statements and associated documents for construction.

• On-site ecological walkovers, desk-based searches and survey assistance (including survey preparation).

• Providing basic toolbox talks, ECoW inspections, watching briefs and other ad-hoc site support for construction works.

• Problem-solving and finding practical, cost-effective solutions to ecological challenges facing BBV construction teams and sub-contractors.

• Actively engendering a culture of continual improvement of on-site ecological practice that is solution-orientated to support construction teams.

• Reviewing and analysing survey data, providing input on reports and other documents as required.

• Keeping internal trackers on Ecology deliverables and maintaining files and folders on the BBV SharePoint and other data sharing systems.

• Adhering to BBV processes and document control requirements, keeping the required documentation and supporting audits as required.

• Proactively proposing ecological enhancement opportunities.

• Working with the BBV Arboricultural Lead on arboricultural mitigation for construction and the links with ecological mitigation for construction.

Experienced required

•Educated to degree or Masters level in an Ecological related subject.

• Full UK driver’s licence and flexibility to travel.

• Literate in MS Office – Word, Excel, Outlook & GIS.

• Good interpersonal skills.

• Excellent communication skills.

• Skills in working collaboratively to obtain the best outcome for the project.

• Good interpersonal and communication skills.

• Determination to see tasks through to completion, with excellent planning and organisation skills.

• CSCS card.

• Basic knowledge and understanding of industry surveys and species identification.

About Balfour Beatty VINCI

Balfour Beatty VINCI is a long-established joint venture between two powerhouses for the delivery of critical infrastructure across rail, transport and other iconic projects in the UK and beyond. We started working together over 30 years ago to deliver the Channel Tunnel, as members of the TransManche Link consortium. In the Midlands, it is Balfour Beatty VINCI’s role to design and build the route, ready for tracks and signalling to be installed. Our work with HS2 Balfour Beatty VINCI have been awarded a 90km section of the HS2 project from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and then on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Overall, we will be building the following across all our sites:

• 9.3km of viaducts

• 62 overbridges

• 35 cuttings

• 56 culverts

• 62 embankments

• 2 twin bore tunnels and 2 cut and cover tunnels

• 28 underbridges and 11 underpasses

We currently have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Ecology Technician within the Sustainability Team. We have multiple of these role based across the project. 

Role Responsibilities;

Support the Ecology Team in the production, review, update and implementation of the Construction Ecology Site Management Plans.
Assist with conducting monitoring programs (e.g. for mitigation site maintenance, great crested newt fencing, pond water levels), reporting results to the Sublot Ecology Lead.
Undertake monitoring activities required by licences/method statements
Provide support to ecological surveys and Ecological Clerk of Work activities (e.g. nesting bird checks)
Assist with management of monitoring equipment - Take and prepare samples for laboratory analysis
Assist with the preparation field reports, annual reports and draft staff reports on ecological issues
Maintain records, minutes, registers, and data as required
Ensure compliance with on-site procedures
Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and client representatives to ensure collaborative working relationships
Be familiar with the conditions of contract, as they relate to ecological issues
Experienced required

Good experience of ecological issues in a work environment
An understanding of ecological legislation and principles of ecological management systems; ability to work as part of the team to ensure compliance
Understanding of the benefits of working collaboratively to problem solve and obtain the best outcome
Good interpersonal and communication skills
Determination to see tasks through to completion, with excellent planning and organisation skills
Good IT skills and confident in the use of Office applications
