The Role:

University College Birmingham (UCB) is seeking a highly experienced safeguarding professional to lead and further develop its safeguarding and Further Education pastoral support services.

As part of the ambitious Student Services and Wellbeing directorate, the Safeguarding and FE Pastoral Support team provides front-line support and advice to students and staff on any relevant matters and are also the point of contact for external agencies and bodies involved in safeguarding and child protection matters. We are looking for someone who has the skills, experience and knowledge to take the team to the next level and to reinforce the principle that safeguarding is everyone's responsibility.

With a new 6th Form Centre welcoming its first students in September 2024 to add to its existing provision for Further Education, Higher Education and Degree Apprenticeships, and having just signed up to the 2024/25 University Mental Health Charter Programme, this is an exciting time to join UCB and be at the forefront of building on the existing support framework to deliver a truly excellent service.

The successful candidate will bring significant experience of working with young people and students in a similar setting and will possess an excellent working understanding of all relevant legislation and statutory guidance applicable to this role, including, but not limited to KCSIE, 2024 and Prevent. The postholder will be expected to ensure all members of staff (academic, professional services et al.) possess an understanding of their professional responsibilities and will promote good practice through the delivery of ongoing training and awareness raising.

With a focus on prevention and early intervention, the Designated Safeguarding Lead and Head of FE Pastoral Support will use their excellent leadership, management and innovation skills to ensure that services are accessible to all students and staff and that they remain agile and responsive to the internal and external environments.

Working as part of the Directorate's Management Team, the postholder will develop excellent working relationships across the institution and beyond and will be expected to play a key role in strengthening our approach to cross-institution collaborative working.

The postholder will also be responsible for ensuring all relevant policies and procedures are in place and are regularly reviewed for effectiveness and accuracy and that relationships with external partners and agencies are maintained, built upon and, where necessary, developed.

The postholder will have extensive experience of a providing advice in a similar setting and will therefore possess a thorough knowledge of the issues that children and adults at risk face, especially with respect to accessing and staying in education.
