Transport Manager (North)

We are seeking to appoint a Transport Manager to join a well-established team, supporting operations across the North of the UK.

This is a key role within a growing organisation, providing consultative support and leadership for the Transport & Vehicle Fleet Operation. With flexibility to be home-based or branch-based (with regular travel), this position is ideal for an experienced Transport/ Fleet Manager or someone ready to step into a new challenge within the transport sector.

This role combines day-to-day operational oversight with strategic input to ensure compliance, cost efficiency, and best practices across the transport function. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting our branch network, mentoring teams, and upholding high standards in transport operations.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Provide consultative and operational support to the Transport & Vehicle Fleet Operation across the North.
Ensure compliance with Operator Licencing and FORS, maintaining legal standards and best practices.
Manage preventative maintenance procedures for a mixed fleet of company cars, commercial vans, and large goods vehicles (HGVs).
Support the Head of Transport in upholding Operator Licence undertakings, ensuring continuous and effective vehicle operations.
Oversee tachograph compliance and drivers' hours at branch level, managing infringement reports and providing coaching as needed.
Coach and mentor the Transport Administration Team and other operational staff, including drivers.
Assist with transport system audits and support the implementation of improvements.
Monitor and manage vehicle operating budgets to drive cost efficiencies.
Communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, acting as a confident negotiator to achieve positive outcomes.

Skills & Experience Required:

Proven experience managing a mixed fleet, with a working knowledge of preventative maintenance systems.
Strong understanding of Operators Licencing, Road Transport Law, and compliance standards.
Holder of a Transport Manager's National/ International CPC qualification in Road Transport Operations (or working towards).
Experience managing multi-site operations and supervisory responsibilities.
Familiarity with Lorry Mounted Crane operations and FORS accreditation systems.
FORS Practitioners would be highly desirable but not essential.
Strong IT Skills especially with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) and fleet management systems.
Demonstrated ability to audit transport systems and implement improvements.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage and negotiate confidently at all levels.
Full UK driving licence with flexibility to travel across the branch network and attend Head Office as needed.

This position will be covering the North of the UK, so the appointed person can be based from home most of the time, with Branch contact around Nottingham, Leeds, Middlesbrough, Liverpool, Workington and Scottish branches also such as Glasgow or Edinburgh.

The ideal candidate would have previous experience as a Fleet or Transport Manager looking after a mixture of fleet vehicles such as company cars, Vans & HGVs, ideally from industries such as civil engineering, construction plant hire, and utilities sectors, who often require vehicles with specialized equipment like cranes.
