About The Team


We are a small, friendly, supportive, and passionate team, that consists of Occupational Therapist and Assistants. Dawn House School is a day and residential school that provides education to pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities aged five to 19 who have complex speech, language and communication needs. You will work collaboratively as part of strong and supportive multi-disciplinary team of teachers, therapists, teaching assistants and residential care officers, with class groups, smaller groups and with individual children.


About The Role


You will support the teaching, therapy and care of pupils professionally and competently with speech, language and communication challenges within school. With support you will plan, deliver and evaluate programmes of therapy using a variety of treatment techniques e.g. exercise, handwriting or postural programmes, sensory diets and self-care programmes. You will also provide administrative support to therapists and Head of Therapy and contribute to the development of the school and Speech and Language UK.


Pupil related activities:

  • Call upon specialist staff for advice as appropriate.
  • Be aware of the national and local standards and guidelines relating to Professional Practice (OT code of conduct).
  • Be aware of and adhere to current legislation and school policies.
  • To work with the OT working with both individual pupils and participating in the running of groups across the school.
  • Support individual pupils in the classroom as appropriate and as directed.
  • To contribute to assessment and differential diagnosis by providing information in discussion and supporting the OT during formal assessment situations.
  • Under the direction of OT and with appropriate support plan, deliver and evaluate programmes of therapy using a variety of treatment techniques e.g. exercise, handwriting or postural programmes, sensory diets and self-care programmes.
  • To be responsible for decisions making during treatment following agreed protocols or guidelines from qualified staff.
  • To recognise when a child needs re-assessing and /or treatment programmes need changing and communicate with qualified staff accordingly.
  • Maintain contemporaneous records of intervention, in accordance with professional standards (Royal College of OT).
  • Maintain regular contact through face-to-face liaison, with the OT and Sensory Integration trained OT.
  • Assist in the efficient preparation and use of therapy materials and equipment, and displays.
  • Complete administration tasks set by the OT e.g., filing, photocopying, preparation of files etc.
  • Be responsible for the maintenance of equipment i.e. the cleaning of resources and reporting of breakages.
  • To work with the Sensory Integration (SI) Trained OT to support in the setting up of, storing and safe use of the sensory equipment in the SI room.
  • Work as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team working within an education context.
  • Be a reflective practitioner. Considering and evaluating alternative and innovative approaches to the management of pupils with sensory processing difficulties and communication disability, and discuss these with therapists.
  • Be involved in the dissemination of skills, knowledge and experience through training and offering advice to other staff, parents, carers and significant others about individual and groups of pupils. Demonstrating practical procedures when appropriate.
  • To support the management of dysphagia under the supervision of a dysphagia trained therapist.

Within Therapy Team and Department:

  • Contribute to curriculum development within the school as appropriate.
  • Access support from designated colleagues, when necessary.
  • Develop an area of interest or responsibility within the department or school e.g. handwriting groups, sensory processing difficulties.
  • Support Occupational Therapy students on placement, volunteers, visitors and SLT University students as appropriate.
  • Support OTs with producing meaningful wall displays (and updating them) and completing administrative tasks such as keeping the assessment forms stocked up and an inventory of resources.
  • Maintain regular contact through face to face liaison with OTs, OTAs and the wider therapy team.
