Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The Ocular Oncology service at Moorfields Eye Hospital is well established and recognised internationally as a centre of excellence. It is a nationally commissioned tertiary referral centre which accepts eye cancer referrals from all over the country. The service has a long standing reputation for training Ocular Oncologists from around the world who then establish a service in their own countries.

The department is looking to appoint three full time Clinical Fellows to work at Moorfields Eye Hospital and St Bartholomew's Hospital. Rotation through the retinoblastoma service at the Royal London Hospital is included for training in paediatric eye cancers. The first post will commence in July 2025 for 12 months. This job provides an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in this sub-specialty and exposure to the multi-disciplinary team.

The successful candidates will be involved in the day to day running of the Ocular Oncology outpatient clinic, seeing both new and follow-up patients. They will be involved in the weekly MDT and receive training in specific ocular oncology surgery including plaque brachytherapy, enucleation and various biopsy techniques for intraocular and ocular surface tumours.

The successful candidates must be GMC registered with a license to practice.

Main duties of the job
  • Consulting with both new and follow-up patients in a clinical setting, under the supervision of a senior doctor
  • Consulting with both new and follow-up patients in a virtual setting
  • Participate in regular operating lists alongside the lead surgeon and become fully trained in specific ocular oncology surgery
  • Attend and participate in the weekly MDT by presenting cases and contributing to educational discussion
  • Lead on ward work, ensuring investigations are ordered, performed and reviewed prior to surgery and to enable prompt discharge of patients after surgery
  • Participating in Ocular Oncology and Naevus clinic audits

At Moorfields, we provide more than just an excellent career and great colleagues to work with. We also offer:

  • Salary including High-Cost Area Supplement
  • Opportunity to join the NHS Pension Scheme
  • Free 24/7 independent counselling service

  • Easy and quick transport links
  • A range of attractive benefits and discounts
  • Access to Blue Light Card and other NHS Discount Schemes
  • Free Pilates classes
  • Full support and training to develop your skills

Job responsibilities

The job comprises outpatient clinics at Moorfields Eye Hospital for new and follow up patients. The cancer nurse specialists provide counselling support for the patients and coordinate admissions to St Bartholomews hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital. The clinical fellows would be expected to assist in this process by liaising between the two sites. We have a full time MDT coordinator. The successful candidates would attend and participate in the weekly MDT by presenting cases and contributing to educational discussion.

The Ocular Oncology service is a tertiary referral centre for intraocular and ocular surface tumours. We admit patients to a hostel one day before surgery to allow time for preoperative investigations, this avoids the problem of patients travelling long distances back and forth to hospital. The main part of the ward work is to ensure investigations are ordered, performed and reviewed prior to surgery and to enable prompt discharge of patients after surgery.

The Ocular Oncology Specialty has a high surgical volume which consists of:

  • Three adult theatre lists a week at Moorfields Eye Hospital (City Road)
  • One retinoblastoma list at Royal London Hospital
  • One theatre list a month at St Bartholomews Hospital for patients who are high risk for general anaesthesia

The successful candidates would receive surgical training in ocular oncology procedures by two consultants (Professor Mandeep Sagoo and Mr Guy Negretti) and two specialist doctors (Mr Amit Arora and Miss Lamis Al-Harby).
