Consultant in Gastroenterology (Inflammatory Bowel Diseases)

Our team provides specialist Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy services across our 3 hospital sites (Dewsbury District Hospital, Pinderfields General Hospital and Pontefract General Infirmary).

Our acute inpatient work is provided on the Pinderfields site with outpatient services and endoscopy provided across all 3 sites.

Our consultants rotate to provide inpatient care on the specialist inpatient gastroenterology ward. We have a Gastroenterologist of the Week model providing expert advice to the rest of the hospital and helping to deliver urgent endoscopy services.

Our gastroenterology team provides a 24/7 GI Bleed on-call service.

We provide specialist clinics for several conditions including Hepatology, IBD, Cancer and Specialist Nutrition.

We currently provide a range of endoscopy services including ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography).

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the post include the following:

  • Specialist IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) clinic (2 face-to-face clinics per week)
  • Endoscopy, with a focus on IBD diagnosis and bowel cancer surveillance (2 endoscopy sessions per week)
  • IBD related e-consultations with primary care and helping with the early diagnosis pathway.
  • Key member of the IBD MDT (multidisciplinary team)
  • General Gastroenterology clinic
  • Contribution to the GI bleed out of hours on-call rota on a 1:8 basis
  • Provision of inpatient care to the dedicated specialty bed base on a 1:8 rota
  • Leadership roles within sub-specialty areas
  • Supervision of junior doctors and nursing staff
  • Urgent and Emergency Care duties include out-of-hours on-call; schedules will take due account of the provisions of working time regulations and safe working.
  • Support from the professional and experienced secretarial team.
  • Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with the Trust Framework, with at least a minimum of 1.5 SPAs included in the core 10 PA timetable.
  • Additional SPA or DCC time may be commissioned in line with the successful candidate's skills and changing service requirements.

Job responsibilities

These posts are offered on a full-time (10 PA) basis, although less than full-time applications will be considered.

Duties will be based across the trust and all our medical staff can be involved in delivering care to patients on all our sites.

Person Specification Experience
  • Able to display independent practice managing inflammatory bowel diseases.
Management Skills
  • Demonstrates intelligent and analytical approach to problem solving.
  • Good time management
  • Possess good organisational and personal management skills.
  • Some experience in leadership and managerial roles
Qualifications
  • Medical Degree from recognised medical school.
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Medical School Prizes

  • Teaching qualification/ prize
GMC Registration
  • Please state full GMC number.
  • Full GMC Registration with licence to practise
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for Gastroenterology and General Medicine or within 6 months of obtaining CCT (or CESR / equivalent)
