Job Opportunity

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is seeking a highly skilled Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our esteemed team. Our Department of Gastroenterology provides comprehensive services to the county of Shropshire and Mid Wales, with a team of 9 Consultant Gastroenterologists and 1 Consultant Hepatologist working across both hospital sites.

Clinical Responsibilities
  • Provide independent care for patients alongside consultant staff, ensuring seamless continuity of care.
  • Participate in the Gastroenterology on-call rota, demonstrating a commitment to 24/7 patient care.
  • Work independently to manage patients with gastrointestinal complaints, balancing emergency and elective care.
  • Contribute to audit and governance, supporting the training of junior medical staff and other healthcare professionals.
  • Undertake administrative duties to support clinical commitments, ensuring efficient service delivery.
  • Be a core member of the Upper GI/Hepatobiliary Cancer MDT, driving multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • Develop enhanced clinical skills, particularly in assessing and managing acutely ill patients.
  • Exhibit exceptional team-working skills, demonstrating a professional attitude and ability to work effectively in a multi-professional team.
  • Deliver clinical and quality targets agreed with clinical teams and commissioners, driving service improvement.
  • Follow patients throughout their clinical pathways, ensuring continuity of care.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is the main provider of acute hospital services for around half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and mid Wales. Our catchment area spans the picturesque parts of England and Wales, with a diverse range of towns and communities.

Job Plan

A formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director and consultant colleagues, on behalf of the Medical Director within 3 months of starting in post. The job plan will be reviewed annually and is a prospective agreement that sets out the consultant's duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the coming year.

Weekly Commitment Breakdown
  • 5.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) of Direct Clinical Care - includes clinical activity, clinically related activity, and predictable and unpredictable emergency work.
  • 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) - includes CPD, audit, teaching, and research. 1.5 of these will be to support revalidation.
  • 2 PA's for Research - The research activity which may include delivery of portfolio research, development of own research ideas/protocols, working with current research fellows, and supporting the development of an embedded research culture at SaTH.
  • Out of Hours Activity - There will be a requirement to take part in an on-call rota primarily for GI bleeds with a frequency of approximately 1 in 8.

The allocation of PAs is reviewed and may be subject to adjustment when a further diary exercise is undertaken or if the service demands a review of the team job plan. Any applicant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with other consultant colleagues.
