Job Title: Senior Occupational Therapist

This is a challenging and rewarding role for an experienced Occupational Therapist seeking to work within the NHS Private Patient Unit (PPU) multi-professional therapy team.

The successful candidate will be an astute senior Occupational Therapist with significant understanding of, and ability to, apply clinical leadership alongside impeccable customer service provision in a commercial environment.

The role requires an Occupational therapist with diverse experience ideally across different areas of medicine, surgery, care of the elderly, renal, orthopaedics, etc. because the PPU operates as a small hospital within a hospital potentially covering any and all parts of clinical care.

Main Duties:

  • As an autonomous practitioner, to be responsible for the provision of a highly specialist, evidence-based therapy service to the private unit patients.
  • To have clinical supervision responsibility for one or more therapists.
  • To be responsible for the continuing development of a highly specialist therapy service, providing expert advice and guidance for other healthcare professionals.
  • To lead on the development and implementation of multi-professional education and training programmes within the unit/trust.
  • To participate in research and development by initiating, planning and undertaking clinical audits/research projects to evaluate and develop the specialist therapy service and produce evidence-based resources, policies and guidelines and support other staff to do this.
  • To support staff with service development in order to ensure provision of a high quality, patient-centred and clinically effective service.

Person Specification:

Education & Professional Qualifications:

  • Degree or equivalent in Occupational Therapy
  • HCPC Registration in OT
  • Completed relevant post-registration specialist courses for example: OT assessments of specific conditions, OT treatment approaches, Outcome measures, Supervision Skills Training for staff and students, OT Practice Educator course

Desirable:

  • Member of Specialist OT Section group

Experience:

Essential:

  • Substantial post-graduate work experience as an Occupational Therapist, predominately working with patients with physical and cognitive disabilities
  • Experience of working as an OT at a senior level with vascular and amputee patients
  • Experience of working with elderly patients
  • Considerable experience of being a Band 6 OT
  • Experience and ability of working in an acute setting
  • Experience of teaching and supervising less experienced staff.

Desirable:

  • Motivational Interviewing/Behaviour Change training (CBT or facilitation skills)

Skills and Aptitudes:

Essential:

  • Knowledge and experience in the use of occupational therapy models of practice
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills to a range of audiences e.g. users, carers and other professionals
  • Experience of working effectively and efficiently as part of an MDT.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and audit programmes in line with requirements for Clinical Governance
  • Knowledge of research and development process, Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
  • Ability to lead a small team
