Job Description: Health and Safety Advisor - Occupational Health

We are seeking an experienced Health and Safety Advisor - Occupational Health to join our team on a part-time basis.

This role involves working at Lincolnshire Police Headquarters in Nettleham, with flexible hours of 15 hours per week on Wednesdays and Thursdays. This is a temporary ongoing position.

Important Note: Due to police vetting criteria, applicants must have resided within the UK continuously for at least 5 years at the time of application.

Job Purpose and Scope:

The post holder will provide expertise in occupational health service provision, including sickness/absence case management, health surveillance, fitness for task medicals, and employee health advice and risk management.

Key responsibilities include undertaking sickness/absence case management via the Occupational Health service delivery software system, following clinical procedures, processes, and evidence-based practice.

The role may also involve delivering employee-driven health services, such as health surveillance, fitness for task medicals, by arrangement/agreement. These face-to-face interventions will be complemented by remote body fluid exposure assessment, travel health advice, and vaccination guidance.

Risk management will be a key consideration throughout all work undertaken by the OHA, requiring regular clinical supervision and participation in governance meetings.

Core Work Areas:
  1. Assess referred employees, providing independent, objective specialist sickness/absence/case management advice to line managers and HR using relevant evidence-based clinical diagnostic tools.
  2. Refer employees into other Lincs Police occupational health services, liaise with treating clinical services, line management, and HR in effective workplace ill health management.
  3. Maintain clinically relevant health records and reports, ensuring information is adequate, relevant, up-to-date, and confidential within hard or software systems employed.
  4. Participate/undertake health surveillance, fitness for task, new starter, and wider employee health advice and risk management in the workplace both remotely and face-to-face.
  5. The role may involve other employee-driven health services like body fluid exposure assessment, travel health advice, pre/post-deployment screening, and support for major incident events.
  6. Participate in clinical supervision and clinical governance activities relating to professional practice, employee risk, self-risk, and colleague risk.
  7. Maintain own professional portfolio, professional society registrations for practice, and participate in evidence-based research and continuous professional development.
  8. Deliver training input increasing awareness of health and the impact line managers may have, encouraging positive engagement.
Essential Criteria:
  1. Degree or diploma in Occupational Health Practice.
  2. Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and confirmed fitness to practice.
  3. Previous experience in delivering sickness/absence case management.
  4. Experience of using Microsoft Office packages.
  5. Previous experience of record keeping, creating, retrieving, and amending occupational health records and files.
  6. Ability to plan and prioritize tasks, manage own workload effectively, and use initiative.
  7. Adaptability and capability to respond to change.
  8. Effective communication skills verbally and in writing, avoiding jargon.
  9. Theoretical and practical knowledge regarding anxiety disorders, depression, and trauma.
  10. Ability to develop strong working relationships within Lincolnshire Police and relevant partners.
  11. Emotional intelligence demonstrating awareness and acceptance of how others feel.
  12. Self-motivation and focus on delivering high-quality services.
  13. Commitment to maintaining continuous professional development and training.
  14. Value confidentiality, with previous experience working with sensitive personal data and obtaining consent in the occupational health setting.
