Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Psychologist to join our team at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will provide a specialist clinical psychology service to children and families referred to the Osteogenesis Imperfecta team, working closely with paediatric consultants and allied health professionals.

The role includes provision of psychological assessment, formulation and evidence-based interventions on a predominantly outpatient basis, and contribution to complex multidisciplinary decision-making and treatment planning. You will be working with the Surgery & Development Stream who offer psychological input to children under the care of twelve medical specialties, including spinal surgery, orthopaedics, plastics, craniofacial, etc.

We draw on a range of therapeutic modalities including Narrative therapy, CBT, Systemic, ACT, Compassion-focused therapy, attachment, and mentalisation-based approaches. There are opportunities to work in creative formulation-driven ways with young people and families and you will have the opportunity to offer individual, family, parent, and group psychological interventions as well as the opportunities to work with external agencies and within GOSH MDT.

Main Duties of the Job
  • To be responsible for providing a specialist systematic and autonomous clinical psychology service within the specialist clinical area, in accordance with objectives agreed with clinical and professional managers.
  • To provide clinical supervision and line management to more junior psychologists and trainees, as appropriate.
  • To contribute to and help put into practice new or revised policies that improve the quality of the service by participating regularly on working parties and committees to develop policies and services relevant to the profession and/or medical specialties, in agreement with the Consultant Psychologist and Head of Psychology.
  • To take part in the evaluation, monitoring and development of the multidisciplinary team's operational policies through the deployment of professional skills in research, service evaluation and audit and ensuring incorporation of psychological frameworks for understanding and provision of high-quality care.

Academic/Professional Qualification/Training

Essential
  • Good honours degree in Psychology.
  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS/HCPC, including clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, and lifespan developmental psychology.
  • Eligibility for Chartered status and membership of the Division of Clinical Psychology.
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professionals Council as Practitioner Psychologist.
Desirable
  • Post-doctoral training and recorded CPD experience and/or further qualifications in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice.
  • Formal training in supervision of other psychologists.
  • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, their carers, and other professionals.
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
  • Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to distressing situations and challenging behaviours.
  • Ability to develop and use complex multi-media materials for presentations in public, professional and academic settings.
  • Evidence of specialised psychological therapeutic skills as used in complex cases within paediatrics.
  • Experience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care.
  • Experience of the application of psychology in different cultural contexts and of working in a multicultural framework.
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to children and young people and child protection.
  • Experience of teaching or training.
  • Experience of presenting psychology to multidisciplinary audiences at conferences or other educational settings.
  • Experience and expertise of working within paediatrics.
Desirable
  • Experience and expertise in working with children who have life limiting and life threatening conditions, including experience of bereavement work.
