Avoiding Technical Debt

The IT and Systems team plays a crucial role by offering data-driven, flexible, and efficient system solutions that support administrative and operational activities. This includes managing systems such as the central operational system, the Institute website, and Salesforce. The team ensures robust integration between all systems, whether internal, university-managed, or external.

Work Environment

Our activities primarily take place at Madingley Hall, a Grade I listed residential building that provides facilities for conferences and events. The hall features 13 meeting rooms, 62 ensuite bedrooms, a bar, and lounge, set amidst 8 acres of beautifully maintained gardens designed by Capability Brown.

The Role

You will join the systems development team consisting of a Senior Systems Developer and a Software Test Analyst. As an Apprentice Systems Developer, you will assist the Senior Systems Developer in developing and maintaining software solutions primarily within the core operational system. Initially, you will work under close supervision but will gradually progress towards independent working as your skills develop.

Learning and Development

This is a level-4 apprenticeship where you will have the opportunity to learn on the job and be allocated 20% of paid study time to pursue the course. Compensation and Benefits

You will receive a competitive salary with potential progression after one year of successful completion of the program. Additionally, upon completing this apprenticeship, you will acquire the following industry-recognized certifications:

  • BCS Level 4 Diploma in Software Development Methodologies
  • CertNexus Cyber Secure Coder
  • Industry recognized certification in either Java or Python

  • Ability to work well within a small team
  • Capacity to use skills and experience to work independently with minimal supervision when required
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage your own workload with minimal supervision

Working Arrangements

We support hybrid working arrangements, currently with staff working 2 days on-site in Madingley Hall and 3 days remotely, for those working Monday to Friday and where the role allows. These arrangements are subject to change and will not form part of the terms and conditions of employment.
